• Bell turning off roaming to Iran

    I just got word that Bell customers will no longer be able to roam while they're visiting Iran. This is due to the Government of Canada's sanctions regarding Iran. So if you're going to Iran make sure you get a SIM card and forward your number.

    To conform to Government of Canada sanctions regarding Iran [Special Economic Measures Act (SEMA)], network roaming has been shut down in Iran as of August 13, 2012.
    Thanks tipster!

    Anyone going to Iran?

      Would forwarding be an option? Iran appears to be a "caller pays" country, so forwarding to a local SIM in Iran could involve a transfer of money from Canada to the Iranian phone company, which would be sanctioned.

      Why was Bell able to hold out for this long? Rogers dropped Iran from its roaming agreements a while ago due to the same reasons.

      Rogers still allows it:

      View Map -> Zone 3 -> Iran

      It may be advertised, but I'm pretty sure internally they've informed reps a while back that roaming is no longer available in Iran.

      I have family visiting Iran once in a while and their best option given the roaming costs was to buy a sim card there. So perhaps this is a good thing in that people won't get charged seriously high roaming charges.

      Correct. I want to say that it's been disabled as of March..

      What sane person from a western nation would go to Iran right now? I mean, if you want to play "Iranian Roulette" with your life, be my guest.

      One who still has family in Iran? Your ability to be open minded, to recognize that there are westerners of Iranian origin and doing it all while staying on topic is simply mind boggling. You might want to consider auditioning for America's Got Talent.

      There are many countries where someone could have family that would be unable to travel to due to current political issues
      It is kind of insane to travel to Iran even if your parents are still living there at this time

      I don't know where people get the idea that traveling to Iran is dangerous. The stories in the news here are unbelievably one-sided. I have close family and friends who go back and forth to Iran all the time and there are no issues. Just stay away from Sistan and Baluchestan province. The rest of the country is very safe, and the people are extremely hospitable.
