    As someone who wanted to line up for an iPhone but couldn't because Apple isn't allowing users to buy unlocked, I can't help but feel a little smug.

    I've just been told by someone that the lineup at the Apple store has stopped moving because all 3 carriers activation systems have crashed.

    <sarcasm>What a surprise, this never happened with the iPhone 3G, 3Gs, 4 and 4s launches</sarcasm>

    So now, Apple isn't selling any more iPhones because they can't activate any more phones.

    What they should do is have a separate allocation for unlocked buyers and allow each person to only buy one.

      I am not surprised to hear this after the announcement of 2 million pre-sales in 24 hours after the announcement. Glad I am not a CS rep for any cellular company any more. I bet they are getting calls from angry customers trying activate their iPhone 5 to no avail.

      A buddy of mine at TELUS just got his activation put through, he is saying the reps are informed the problems are now rectified and things are moving along.

      Same with another at Bell. Rogers.... well good luck.

      I feel sorry for the people in line. Hopefully Apple will learn from this.
      I thought the 1 person/1 phone was being scammed by people planting many, many people in line to buy the unlocked units to ship overseas and that was why they went to this new, asinine policy of unlocked only online (for now).

      I waited at a little rogers store for an hour while they tried to activate my phone and it crashed at the final screen 4 times. I left and they said they would keep trying. Has anyone got a rogers one activated yet?

      Why can't they just sell people the phones and let them activate them when they get home, whenever that may be?

      Mine is Rogers. Got it activated no problem. Was a little slow but it's all good now.

      I put my chain-sawed SIM in, and it activated itself. Only took about 10 seconds -- if that. No lines, no stinky people who haven't showered in 3 days, no screaming babies. apple.com/store is the only way to go.

      I got in line at 1230 EDT and walked out 45 minutes later activated. The Apple store had 2 ATT reps, 1 Verizon rep and 1 Sprint rep.

      I did not mean activating. Rogers' system would not allow the processing of the hardward upgrade to be put through their system so I could not finalize the transaction. It had nothing to do with sticking the sim card in the phone and activating it on the network.
