Possible Blackberry Z10 shortages at launch?

That's pretty nuts, but good for BlackBerry. I guess they'll have no trouble selling out initial stock at $650 off contract/$150 on contract prices, which is exactly what they need.

I tend to believe that each forum here is for enthusiast, and stumbling upon the article wasn't out of spite, it's not like I even visit the BB forums often. It's almost always because of a link from the HoFo FB page.

Third, did I get off topic? No? I didn't feel a need to remove it completely. If you have more personal questions directed at me in the future, you could use a private message instead of contributing to the thread to interrogate me...

I think this phone looks awesome. If I had $650 I would be all over it, i've always wanted to return to Blackberry since my switch to the i devices. Unfortunately all i've got is $6.50 and I will be lucky if that buy's me the usb cable to charge it ...

I would like to support a Canadian company but the Z10 can not even compete with the phone i use now which is 6 months old. It has a smaller screen, dual core vs. my quad core processor, and an abysmal app store at mostly high cost apps. It weighs more even though it is shorter and narrower then my phone.
It seems to not have gorilla glass.
So why would i buy it?

to be fair, my experience, the dual core processor in the z10 is faster than the Tegra 3 in the 4x. Anyways, 2 different operating systems so the processor is less important here.
As for the screen size it's meant to make it easier to use with one hand.
I agree about the app store, it's going to be boring for a while.
The weight is not necessarily a bad thing. Could mean it feels more solid.

I am tempted to skip over to Canada for a day and pick up a Z10.
I would like to see how the Z10 compares to my iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S III for everyday use.
But still a tough call since I prefer physical qwerty.

The 4x is as fast as the galaxy S3 in Quadrant and in my personal experience from using both, So you are saying the Z10 is faster then the S3?
regarding the screen size that is a personal preference but for me 4.3" screens are to small already, the smallest screen "i can live with" are 4.5" so 4.2 would just be to small. I didn't hold the Z10 but can say that even though the S3 and 4X weigh the same the 4X feels more solid, so i would think it would be more construction of the device and not it's weight. I also guess i am hooked on Android so i am not sure i am willing to switch OS's yet.

umm you have an iPhone 4S and a Samsung Galaxy S III yet you prefer a physical qwerty?

A quick check of Z10 prices on eBay (where they can already be had in the UK) shows several auctions bidding north of $1,625 for the privilege of being one of the first to have a Z10.

I'm doubting shortages, or at least not for very long. The US carriers' delays have probably left Blackberry with more production capacity than planned to crank out the Canadian/UK carrier versions. IMO Z10 looks good (hardware & software), and with built-in security from a company with solid security experience and reputation. If my phone budget wasn't ≤ $400 this time around I very likely would've gotten one.

I ordered one and got a txt that it's in stock and a phone call from the store to pick it up on Feb 5. Apparently they won't release it before then.

Anyone want to buy it from me for $999?

Apparently Futureshop isn't doing pre-orders (at least the one I talked to). So on Feb 5th it's first-come, first-served on any carrier, upgrade or new activation.

So, who's lining up at Futureshop?

Edit - the one I talked to has very few units so make sure you're first!

Edit2 - stores may be getting more stock, the 5th is still a few days off so no need to panic yet.

To summarize my past arguments about Blackberry security:

1. Blackberry's "built in security" was a valid argument in 2007 and prior, when other smartphones of the time had squat for security measures. It's not so much today. With other mobile OS platforms supporting AES, SSL/TLS, Exchange ActiveSync encryption, S/MIME, IPSec and OpenVPN, they can easily match the security protocols that Blackberry has baked in to their infrastructure, without the added costs of maintaining BES servers.

To say these other standards don't match up to Blackberry's security levels is to basically say the moment you or any of your contacts access the same resources on a desktop, you've made your e-mail and private communications insecure, since desktops rely on those same technologies for secure communications. In which case: why even bother?

2. For BIS, security is pretty much out the window, specifically considering that Blackberry is readily offering various countries backdoors into the vaunted "secure" infrastructure. And for BB10, BIS is pretty much nonexistent anyway.

3. With that "security" comes a price: if there's an outage on Blackberry infrastructure, the effects are near-total lack of data access. Blackberry's strongest feature is also its weakest link.

Don't get me wrong: I actually think the Z10 and BB10 are steps in the right direction for Blackberry, and will make them respectable contenders. If I were still a die hard Blackberry user as I was back in early 2007, I'd upgrade to this. But the fact remains that the "security" argument is no longer valid. Security just isn't a Blackberry exclusive anymore.
