• T-Mobile To Offer 42Mbps Service in 2011 + Current Network Expansion

T-Mobile just sent us the following heads-up via email:

T-Mobile expands HSPA+ network footprint; plans to offer faster speeds in 2011

Today, T-Mobile USA, Inc. announced the continued expansion of its super-fast mobile broadband network to 100 million Americans in more than 55 major metropolitan areas.

T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network – which offers theoretical peak throughput speeds of 21Mbps – is now available in Boston, Mass.; Erie, Penn.; Fresno, Palm Springs and San Diego, Calif.; Miami, Fla.; Richmond, Va.; Spokane, Wash.; and Topeka, Kan.

“Our new network offers today’s available 4G speeds to more people than any other wireless network in the country and we’re not done yet. We are now on pace to more than double our HSPA+ footprint – reaching more than 200 million people by this year – with plans to offer 42Mbps theoretical speeds in 2011,” said Neville Ray, chief network officer for T-Mobile USA.

What HSPA+ devices work on their network, and at these speeds?

I think right now, there's a couple USB dongles that will do 42mbps (sold in Europe, I don't know if they'll do the 1700mhz band that T-Mo uses). That's about it.

However, I don't think not having 21mbps or 42mbps on current smartphones is a big loss -- downloads are really the only thing (even on a desktop) that can use those kinds of speeds, the CPU will be the bottleneck for everything else.

One note, the 42mbps is achieved by bonding together two 5mhz 21mbps channels. I haven't heard of T-Mo having capacity problems, but if they do this won't help them a bit.

I am not aware of any phones supporting is, are there any I don't know about? If there are no devices to take advantage of the upgrades, why are they not expanding their coverage instead of upgrading existing infrastructure?

I can only imagine what size processor that phone will need to use that 21mbps to its full advantage... Let alone when it tethers... 3G is a battery killer already, now your gonna bump that speed up to ~21mbps and only run a small 1500mAh battery....
