• Use Verizon 4G LTE Pantech UML290 USB Modem on Mac

    The following information has been released publicly by VZW advanced support so I feel I can share this now:
    If you want to use the UML290 on the Mac/Linux/UNIX/other-platforms you can now do so if you have the engineering knowledge or a little know-how:
    Quick Notes: Verizon 4G LTE uses the GSM APN authentication method through a GGSN (similar to AT&T) and 3G (1X/EVDO) traditional uses the HA CDMA method. The old CDMA authentication method has been posted years before so I won't repost that.
    You WILL NOT GET SUPPORT UNTIL THE OFFICIAL VZACCESS Software comes out on the Mac.


    4G LTE GSM General Device Settings-
    Phone Number: PhoneNumber
    Account name: PhoneNumber@vzw4g.com
    Password: vzw

    Advanced Settings-
    Carrier: Generic
    Model: GPRS (GSM/3G)
    APN: vzwinternet
    CID: 1

    Click OK, then connect and enjoy.

    So on the Mac connection manager (generic apple), make a profile for your UML290 hardware, should be a modem. Make a GSM connection profile with the above. Phone number is your data-stick phone number (fake phone number, used for system identification, get it from VZAccess or your account page online). Account name is "phonenumber@vzw4g.com". (Basically add @vzw4g.com to your phonenumber. Password is "vzw", same as 3g CDMA. In GSM/3G/4G carrier use generic (no special parameters). Model is GPRS (GSM/3G, same as 4G). GSM APN is "vzwinternet". CID is 1 if your drivers need it.

    Enjoy 4G LTE GSM technology by VZW on your Mac! I will be running this on my Linux engineering dev machine soon.

      Hello Willz,
      I am also trying to Use Verizon 4G LTE Pantech UML290 USB Modem on Linux,
      and i am stuck now.Can you please help in clarify below quesions?

      1) Do we really need new (Packet based) driver for UML290 device to work in Linux
      2) Can you provide the AT commands to connect to the network using this device.

      What driver? People with Fedora or Ubuntu say it just worked using the generic Mobile Broadband drivers shipped with the distro and all they had to do is add the "vzwinternet" apn... I don't have the AT commands as I did it the simple GUI way, the dial should be "#777" for the modem. Best way is to try on Ubuntu or one of the distro's and check the logs and you should be able to get the AT specific commands that the GUI did for you.

      Thank-you! I went in to the VZ store this afternoon and picked up my modem went out to the parking lot and followed the instructions and was up and going on my Mac Book in no time.

      I was able to get the 4G working, but 3G is not working ... I assume we have to setup a separate Dial up ... The settings I remember:

      Telephone: #777
      Account Name: yournumber@vzw3g.com
      pwd: vzw

      Are the settings the same under advanced (as for the 4G LTE) or do we need something different? Has anyone had luck getting the 4G dial-up method working in a non 4G area or have you created a separate dial-up for 3G?? I'm in between both ...

      Use a router so you can connect via Linux, Win, Mac or Android, Iphone, BB, etc.....

      There is a potential problem with the above information. While it does allow you to use the UML290 in a Mac, you will no longer be able to use the UML290 in a Windows computer running the current VZAccess Manager. To reset the card, you can follow the steps here:

      I've tried this on my MacBook Pro and am getting the error --

      Network Connection

      The communication device selected for your connection does not exist. Verify your settings and try reconnecting.

      ---- any ideas?

      iyeska, I get that error if I plug it into a different USB slot. The OS isn't recognizing the device.

      DO NOT DO THIS ANYMORE. CHANGE THE CID TO #3!!! This will NOT screw up the VZAccess existing APN config since it's existing at CID of #3!

      It took a little more work to get the Pantech 290 to work on my Macbook Pro laptop and so here is an update to all the confusion. One note - I did find that the modem will spontaneously disconnect at times so I still looking forward to when Verizon has the Mac drivers ready. Also getting it to work with Parallels was a PITA. My screens tell the story best.




      Use your devices phone number for the dummy 8005551212 I put in.








      The upload speed tests vary widely because Verizon uses compression.

      The best way to get this working would be to use a wifi model like the Cradlepoint Wireless Portable Router PHS 300 Battery operated.

      Got the pantech today and using the last post got a great 4G connection in NY. I have now, however, traveled outside the 4G area and am trying to connect under 3G. The MAC VZAccess program starts when i plug in the pantech and connection to global access (Edge) but doesn't seem to find the 3G connections. Any ideas/input on how to set up the mac to use the pantech in both 3G and 4G situations? Thanks

      Hey everybody,

      Thanks for your posts--they all seem so user friendly, but I just cannot get it to work.

      I am in an area that doesn't have 4g, so I used mynumber@vzw3g.com in account name. At telephone number I have tried my phone number as well as #777.
      Either way, Network Connection asks that I "Pick up phone and dial #777 (or my number). Click OK when phone rings, then hang up." I click Okay, then Network Connection says "An error occurred with the modem. Try reconnecting..." etc

      All the advanced settings are as you all described - I have also tried @vzw4g.com, and also tried CUD as 1 and as 3.

      Any help is appreciated.

      Alternatively, has anyone successfully tried VirtualBox to make the uml270 work?

      I've spent more hours than I want to admit trying to get this to work consistently with no success. It would connect a few times then stop connecting. I finally gave up on a direct connection using the mac and then tried it using VMARE and a virtual window7 client running on the mac. After 5+ support calls with VMWARE and finally Verizon, we discovered that, under the new 4G scenario, when you connect with the PANTECH to the verizon network, it assigns you a private IP address that cannot be "pinged" from the internet. Thus, the VMARE solution of creating a VPN on your virtual windows7 machine then VPNing into it from the MAC won't work as you can't get to your virtual machine from the internet.

      Verizon said their doing this to prevent people with high-speed 4G connections from setting them up and then using the connections to allow people to FTP into their machines, etc. Thus, they are 'hiding' 4G connections from the net .

      The higher level tech support guy at Verizon did tell me they are hard at work testing the MAC Access Manager solution for the PANTECH and he said and estimate of no more than 3 weeks before they release mac version of the access manager that will work with the 4G modems (take his statement for whatever you think it's worth).

      I read of one esoteric solution that involved using a RJ45 loopback cable to connect a USB network adapter connected to the virtual PC (through the MAC) with another USB network adapter connected to the MAC. I tried it and it works but it's an ugly solution that involves using 2 usb ethernet adapters connected to my new macbook air and a short cable to connect them both. Cumbersome, ugly and time-consuming to set up.

      I went back to my old 3G modem (and back to $10 more/month for access) and am going to hold onto the 4G until they update the software for mac.

      I'm still very interested if anybody has discovered a solution that will connect reliably and stay connected.

      And now I'm getting a message telling me that no phone service is avaialbe. What the heck?? Also, if anyone cal tell me how to delete a second configuration that I inadvertently added, that would be great. But mostly I just want to get this darned thing to connect.
