An interesting application has come out today. Dell voice powered by Fongo.
providing an alternative to Google Voice and other VOIP services at some very aggressive rates.
I was reading this over at MobileSyrup and wanted to share it here as well to start a discussion.
The service is offered free and is available on PC, iPhone and Android. A Blackberry version is in the works.
You are provided a Canadian phone number, or you can port your existing number over if you're so inclined.
This gives you access to the ability to make free calls to numbers in 30 large metropolitan areas. Some of which are Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.
Incoming calls are "free" but it does use data so be warned. According to Daniel at MobileSyrup they have the usage pegged at about a Megabyte a minute on 3G so you may want to keep those off wifi calls short and quick.
There are also hundreds of regional smaller cities in which you can also make and receive free calls.
International calls are also fairly inexpensive and can be purchased. You can Call over 60 countries with rates starting as low as 2¢/minute plus a 4¢ connection fee. You can search through Dell's list of international charges here as well.
From Dell's product page it states:
Dell Voice means free* long distance across most of Canada, incredibly inexpensive international calling rates, and free premium features like Voicemail.*
This looks like a very good product. If anything, it will put pressure on Google to release Google Voice in Canada in an official capacity, especially with the addition of free features like voicemail and caller ID
What are your thoughts? Will you be trying the app? Let us know in the forums.
