• RIM accuses Apple of trying to rig an upcoming Nano Sim vote in the ETSI

RIM has called out Apple for trying to fix an upcoming vote in the ETSI for the new Nano Sim format.

iDownloadBlog has posted a very interesting article that also links to a letter from RIM, posted on Cnet states that some Apple employees are registering themselves as working at other companies. Bell Mobility, KT Corp. and SK Telekom are named.

I'm not sure I buy this. How many people ave voting on this to begin with? Would 3 votes sway the decision if this is even true?

    What do you guys think?

wait, sorry for being dumb, but is this nano SIM that they're going on about actually the micro SIM that's in iphone 4, 4S and iPads right now? If so, when did they change it from Micro to Nano sim? I was just looking at the tray with the SIM in the picture and the SIM I have only has 3 gold rows instead of the four gold rows in the picture above (and every other pic of a nano SIM) but is the nano and micro actually the same SIM card?

It's not 3 votes each sitting member represents many votes. Apple currently has double the amount of votes vs. any other member such as Nokia. Will it make a difference when your talking about 183 votes controlled by Apple vs. the 1600 or so total votes? Well that just depends on the vendors who have not publicized their loyalties. So they certainly could hold the balance. Apple actually gained these votes by registering subsidiaries as opposed to falsely misrepresenting other parties.
Nokia has already stated that it will pull it's own IP should Apple win... this would prevent Apple's sim from success since it also uses Nokia IP. All that said I wouldn't want to see a drawer for sim's become standard.

@Howmander no they are not the same.

The main reason for this nano-SIM thing must be to prevent "unauthorized" third-party SIMs from being used. That has led to istuff being casually resold around the world, stepping on Apple's distribution turf agreements. Software locks are eventually bypassed but if they introduce a real hardware incompatibility (compared to the minor inconvenience of the micro-SIM) it will make it all the more difficut.

Apple continues as the leader against consumer freedom, by design.

I agree with HF305. The only reason for a nano-SIM is to introduce a "proprietary" component that will prevent Apple's phones from being used with other networks SIMS. I certainly hope this gets shot down. Not so much because I want to use an Apple phone but I sometimes need to move a SIM from an Apple phone into a standard GSM device.

This seems like a pre April Fool's joke. The microsiim is STILL predominantly only found on the Iphone 4 series gsm. There are some microsims (LTE Verizon ones, Nokia's latest gsm phones and a few others) but I don't think that the microsim format is going to get universal adoption, let alone this naNOwhere format...

Apple is leading the industry but I get sick of how they try to force standards on others...

This makes absolutely no sense. The ipad is sold not bound to any carrier (other than the verizon one) and Apple sells the iphone unlocked.

Pretty soon we'll have nano sim as well as microsim adaptors. You'll have nano micro and nano standard adaptors and cutters. It'll be a three sim sized mess. Standardize on microsim first then consider nano. This sim size thing is one big pita.

Not sure if April Fools joke... or Apple just trying to control the industry again.

I'm so glad they're fighting for the, umm... big rich people.
