    LTE Advanced: mobile broadband up to 10 times faster

    * Ericsson demonstrates LTE Advanced over the air in a mobile environment
    * More than 10 times faster than today's commercial LTE networks
    * Based on commercial hardware compliant with 3GPP Release 10
    * Commercial operation expected to start in 2013

    Consumers in Sweden were the first in the world to experience commercial LTE services. Today, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) demonstrated the next step of LTE, known as LTE Advanced, to the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS). The demonstration, held in Kista, Sweden, featured speeds more than 10 times faster than those currently experienced by LTE consumers in Sweden.

    The system, based on commercial hardware, was operating on a test frequency provided by the PTS. This enabled Ericsson to demonstrate LTE Advanced functionality such as carrier aggregation of 3 x 20MHz (60MHz aggregated) over the air in a mobile environment for the first time.

    Mr. Urban Landmark, Head of Spectrum Department of Swedish regulator PTS, says: "Sweden is in the forefront when it comes to usage of mobile broadband. Sweden was both early with licensing of harmonized spectrum in the 2.6GHz and 800MHz bands, and the first country in the world where LTE was commercially deployed. The demonstration today indicates that mobile broadband technologies continue to evolve rapidly."

    LTE Advanced will further enhance the speed and capacity that will be needed in the Networked Society in the years to come. The technology is compliant with the 3GPP Release 10 global standard. Recently, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) also selected LTE Advanced as one of the technologies that fulfills International Mobile Telecommunication's criteria. The first stages of LTE Advanced are expected to be in commercial operation in 2013.

    Seems someone wasn't listening when Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop asked everyone to turn off their cameras and recording devices during a recent company presentation where he unveiled the company's first Windows Phone 7 device codenamed "Sea Ray."

    Sprint and LightSquared To Team Up For LTE Deployment

    LightSquared Inc. reached a 15-year deal with Sprint Nextel Corp. to share network expansion costs and equipment, and to provide high-speed wireless service to the phone company.

    Falcone told Harbinger Capital Partners investors about the accord in a letter today obtained by Bloomberg News. The companies were discussing a deal valued at as much as $20 billion, people familiar with the matter said earlier this month.

    "LightSquared and Sprint will jointly develop, deploy and operate LightSquared’s 4G LTE network," according to the letter. "Sprint will become a significant customer of LightSquared’s 4G LTE network."

    Microsoft gets antitrust approval to buy Skype

    On Friday June 17, 2011, 5:57 pm EDT

    WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Microsoft has won U.S. antitrust approval to buy the Internet phone service Skype, the Federal Trade Commission said in a website posting on Friday.

    Microsoft announced in May it was buying Skype for $8.5 billion, its biggest-ever acquisition, placing a rich bet on mobile and the Internet to try and best rivals such as Google Inc.

    The approval was announced in a listing of deal approvals that comes out several times a week.

    Microsoft's interest in the money-losing, but popular service highlights a need to gain new customers for its Windows and Office software. Skype has 145 million users on average each month and has gained favor among small businesses.

    New Apple Technology Stops iPhones From Filming Live Events

    CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Fans at concerts and sports games may soon be stopped from using their iPhones to film the action -- as a result of new technology being considered by Apple, The Times of London reported Thursday.

    The California company has plans to build a system that will sense when a person is trying to film a live event using a cell phone and automatically switch off their camera.

    A patent application filed by Apple, and obtained by the Times, reveals how the software would work. If a person were to hold up their iPhone, the device would trigger the attention of infra-red sensors installed at the venue. These sensors would then instruct the iPhone to disable its camera. Other features, such as the phone’s ability to make a call or send text messages, would not be affected.

    Verizon network recovery efforts in Alabama (Video)

    Here's a cool video I found on Verizon Wireless's YouTube account about the different network stories from the April 27th, 2011 tornadoes in Alabama.

    They apparently had 4 completely destroyed cell site's in the Birmingham Metro, and over 80 sites damaged and on backup power or temporarily out immediately after the storm!!

    Throughout the entire state, AT&T Mobility lost the ability to process any calls or data period over 3G in most area's, and GSM was down as well for a period of about 3-5 days in the hardest hit area's like Tuscaloosa/Jefferson/Shelby/Cullman and North AL counties.

    Verizon immediately after the storm had about a 70% success rate for outgoing/incoming calls due to everyone calling their friends and family to check up on them.

    T-Mobile went down for quite a while as well, and in some areas they are still down or running on half capacity. Sprint and Nextel went down for over 1-2 weeks in some areas that didn't have power since most of their sites don't have backup generators.

    Southern Linc stayed up or was brought back up very quickly after the storm's, 95% of their sites have backup Diesel/Propane/Natural Gas Generac Generators and most have microwave redundancy.

    The public and the relief effort's used Verizon wireless data to help plan rescue and recovery efforts throughout the state.
