Killing mobile choice is bad for our digital economy, bad for our wallets, and bad for our country as a whole.
This Big Telecom takeover goes against Canadian rules and right now Industry Minister Paradis is about to decide whether he'll enforce those rules. Will he feel the pressure from you, or only from the Big Telecom lobbyists who want more control and more ability to price-gouge?
Save our independent mobile providers before it’s too late. →

Everytime I go to a store ask questions and try to get service, the people they have working are always unhelpful and impatient. I dont know if they are just trained to be like that but it frustates me. I was coming home from work and saw this Wind store off Dixie and Steeles in Brampton. They had a sign saying Free Gift Bag for grand opening so I went to check it out. Not only were they friendly but they took the time to explain everything and go through it again to make sure its what I wanted. I would definitly recommend people to come into that store who need their service explained to them throughly with no pressure.

I got a bluetooth, screen protector, case and car charger when I activated a $30 plan. Go to 8 Strathearn Ave Brampton.
Best customer service by far.

Rogers also in talks to purchase Wind; BCE for Public Mobile
News | THE WIRE REPORT
Published: Friday, 05/17/2013 5:11 pm EDT
Last Updated: Friday, 05/17/2013 5:12 pm EDT

Further consolidation in Canada's wireless market is expected this year as Rogers Communications Inc. is another player in talks with Wind Mobile about purchasing the new entrant carrier and BCE Inc. has held discussions with Public Mobile Inc., industry sources said.

The people spoke to The Wire Report on a background basis because the negotiations are private, and said the talks do not necessarily mean those companies are close to announcing deals.

“Everyone is talking to everyone,” one person said.

The sources said further consolidation is expected following Telus Corp.'s announcement Thursday that it will purchase new entrant carrier Dave Wireless Inc., operating as Mobilicity, for $380 million. According to the deal, Telus would take Mobilicity's 250,000 subscribers and the AWS spectrum licences the new entrant purchased for $243.2 million in 2008.

Incumbent wireless carriers BCE and Rogers, or other possible buyers, are not expected to announce any possible deals for new entrants Wind Mobile and Public Mobile before Industry Minister Christian Paradis releases his final decision, as soon as this month, on new rules for spectrum transfers, particularly sales to the incumbents, the people said.

Rogers is just one of several companies talking with Wind Mobile, owned by Amsterdam-based VimpelCom Ltd. Other potential suitors are BCE Inc. and Accelero Capital, a Paris-based investment firm owned by former Wind Mobile investor Naguib Sawiris, in a partnership with outgoing Wind CEO Anthony Lacavera, The Wire Report reported in April.

Investment firm Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. has also been in talks with Wind, though it said in April it was backing out of an offer.

VimpelCom chief executive Jo Lunder said this week that the company is keeping its options open in the Canadian market and that it could hold on to its Wind Mobile Canada asset.

Industry Minister Christian Paradis must approve Telus' deal for Mobilicity and the transfer of the new entrant's spectrum assets. The minister must also decide on Rogers' proposed purchase of unused “set aside” spectrum from Shaw Communications Inc. for $325 to $350 million.

Further purchases of new entrants by the incumbents pose a problem for Paradis' policy aim of ensuring four competing wireless carriers in every region of Canada, and sources said Lacavera, partnered with Accelero, has a stronger case to make to the government for a purchase of Wind because the bid would keep a fourth player alive.

Lacavera and Accelero's offer for Wind will depend, to some degree, on how much the bidders are willing to invest. Analysts expect Wind Mobile to sell for $600 million to $900 million.

Canaccord Genuity telecom analyst Dvai Ghose told The Wire Report in March that Lacavera and Accelero would also need to consider spending about $500 million to $600 million in Industry Canada's upcoming 700 MHz auction in order to compete in the market, as well as $200 million to $300 million for 2500 MHz spectrum in an auction the following year. That does not include the cost of building out fourth-generation wireless networks, which would cost hundreds of millions of dollars, he said.

The sources said that some of the talks for purchasing new entrants—at least those that are more advanced—have involved presentations to the government about possible deals.

The Lobby Monitor reported this spring that Accelero hired Ottawa lobby firm Playbook Communications for meetings with government, and that Toronto private equity firm Catalyst Capital Group Inc., which has also expressed interest in purchasing a new entrant and operating a fourth wireless carrier, hired consultants with Summa Strategies in Ottawa.

According to the federal lobbyist registry, representatives from Globalive (headed by outgoing Wind CEO Lacavera) and Mike Van Soelen, a PlayBook Communications consultant representing Accelero, on April 9 met with Kelly Gillis, senior assistant deputy minister at Industry Canada; Phil Harwood, a policy adviser in the Prime Minister’s Office; and Sean Speer, director of policy in the finance minister's office; as well as other officials at Industry Canada and the Finance Department.

Van Soelen again met with Harwood on April 17 on Accelero’s behalf, the lobbyist registry shows. The subject matter of the all the meetings was “telecommunications.”

PlayBook is registered to lobby for Accelero and Globalive on the government’s policy framework on spectrum licences, and to represent Lacavera’s AAL Corp. to “discuss the rules governing the transfer of acquired spectrum licences,” according to the registry.

Rogers officials met with Gillis on April 8 and with Gillis and John Knubley, deputy minister of Industry Canada, on April 26 to discuss telecom and “consumer issues.” The company also met with Sean O’Leary, Paradis’ telecom policy adviser, on April 16, the registry shows.

BCE representatives also met with Gillis and Speer separately in early April, according to the registry, and with Nigel Wright, the prime minister’s chief of staff, on April 25, to discuss telecomunications.

The Wire Report reported Thursday that Telus also held a series of meetings with senior government officials to discuss telecom issues in April, in advance of its announcement of a deal to purchase Mobilicity.

Industry sources told The Wire Report that they expect Paradis to release the new spectrum transfer rules as soon as the end of this month, possibly timed with a speech the minister will make June 5 at a conference in Toronto called the Canadian Telecom Summit. Analysts with Veritas said this week they expects the federal government will provide “regulatory relief” for Canada's new entrant wireless carriers within the next three weeks.

Companies participating in Industry Canada's upcoming 700 MHz spectrum auction, scheduled for November, have until June 11 to submit initial applications and deposits. According to the auction rules, registered bidders are not permitted to consolidate with one another.

As a reference I'm using an old BB 9780, which always has 5 bars and great voice quality.

I'd really like to move into a N4, but I've heard some complaints about signal quality.

(btw i am with Mobi and with the deal, might switch to Wind, so I'd like to know about antenna strength before purchasing a N4 - this is why I asked on the WIND forum for the WIND network - I mistakenly wrote Mobi in the title and can't change it)

Thank you

MONTREAL - Industry Canada needs to make it clear if it's going to uphold its own rules on the sale of new wireless carrier Mobilicity, says the CEO of small competitor Wind Mobile.

Big carriers like Rogers, Bell and Telus shouldn't be allowed use loopholes or do creative deals to get around the rules, Anthony Lacavera said Friday.

"The government can say either you can do deals like that or you can't," Lacavera said in an interview.

"Rules are always open to some interpretation. So at a minimum, the government needs to be clear and decisive and fast with what they say."

Telus announced a plan Thursday to buy struggling wireless carrier Mobilicity for $380 million. The company has asked for regulatory approval for the deal before Mobilicity's five-year licence expires because of its poor financial situation.

Mobilicity, as well as Wind Mobile, bought spectrum — radio waves over which cellphone networks operate — that was set aside for new players to bid on in order to bring more competition to the cellphone market. As a result, their licenses can't be sold and transferred to any of the big carriers until next year.

Industry Minister Christian Paradis has said he will take the time he needs to review the Telus-Mobilicity deal, but Lacavera said there has to be clarity on the rules before carriers can make their applications on June 11 to bid in the next spectrum auction.

Wind Mobile, with its just more than 600,000 subscribers and no-contract service, faces an uncertain future.

Dutch owner VimpelCom has put Wind Mobile up for sale, opening up the possibility that one of the big three could swoop in and pick it up.

It has also been reported that Pubic Mobile, the third company that launched after the last spectrum auction, has hired an investment banker to find a buyer.

Public Mobile isn't under any the same sale restrictions because it bought a different kind of spectrum, but the company has said it also wants the rules that were set out to be followed.

"We are at a critical juncture in the development of sustainable wireless competition in the Canadian wireless marketplace," Public Mobile said in a recent submission to Industry Canada on transfers of spectrum licences.

Public Mobile noted Paradis has made it clear that he wants to have four wireless competitors in each region of the country.

"The intent of the policy was not to have this set-aside spectrum to end up in the hands of the incumbents," said Public Mobile, referring to Rogers (TSX:RCI.B), Telus (TSX:T) and Bell (TSX:BCE).

Both Wind Mobile and Public Mobile worry about the eventual state of competition in the wireless industry and the impact on the prices that consumers will pay.

"Obviously, Bell, Telus and Rogers know that the game might almost be up so they're not going to be inclined to be handing out as aggressive promotions anymore," Lacavera said.

Public Mobile said if Ottawa doesn't act, the recent benefits of competition from the new wireless carriers would be lost to consumers and businesses.

Rogers also has complicated matters for Industry Canada with an option to buy unused spectrum from Shaw Communications Inc. (TSX:SJR.B) purchased in the set-aside auction for new competitors in 2008. Even though Shaw hasn't launched a wireless business, the licence doesn't expire until next year either.
I know that with the S3s, that if you SIM unlocked a Wind/Mobilicity S3, you’d be able to use the phone on any North America carrier (Though without LTE). Does this still work with a Wind/Mobilicity S4?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Telus Corp. has struck a deal to acquire upstart carrier Mobilicity for $380-million.

Mobilicity, which is legally known as Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises Holdings Inc., announced the “arrangement agreement” Thursday morning, saying the purchase price was subject to a working capital adjustment.

“The transaction is scheduled to close when all necessary approvals and consents have been received and conditions to closing have been satisfied or waived,” the company said in a release.

But the deal’s future is far from certain since it unclear whether it will approved by the federal government. Industry Minister Christian Paradis is mulling whether to create new rules to prevent incumbents like Telus, Rogers Communications Inc. and BCE Inc. from acquiring spectrum assets from foundering upstarts when a standstill agreement expires next year.

Moreover, the government insists that it is committed to ensuring at least four wireless carriers in each regional market of the country, including Ontario and key western markets where Mobilicity and other new entrants offers service.

Hello,

I signed up on this forum because after reviewing other similar threads, i still am not content with the "answers" that have been presented, there was more ranting about what phone is better, (nexus, Samsung s3 etc.) I ask if we can please keep this thread regarding the topic in question - my thanks in advance.

So after receiving a 380 dollar bill from Koodo mobile for my Iphone this month - i finally said enough is enough - i still had a wind mobile sim active from when they had the "holiday miracle plan" (basically unlimited everything and more for 40 bucks a month)

I gave apple a call today and they said the AWS iphones were available for purchase in Canada now. So i went to apple and purchased the new iphone 5 unlocked.

Got the sim card cut to fit the slot, threw it in, worked perfect.

Now, the only issue i have come across regarding compatibility is the fact that IMESSAGE/FACETIME will not connect. The message i continuously get is "waiting for activation"

I am able to get IMESSAGE working, but its via EMAIL. But when i text people, my email shows up. I would much rather have my phone number.

My question - Has anyone actually been successful with their Iphone 5 on Wind mobile using their phone number on Imessage? Any way around this? I feel like I cant be the only person with this issue.

Everything else on the phone works beautifully, even if imessage does not end up working im still content with it for the price im paying in comparison to what i was paying before, but it really would be amazing if i could get the Imessage to work so i can connect better with friends whom have iphones aswell...

Thanks in advance for the reply's.

I guess this is pretty similar to the folks trying to us iMessage on iPhones with WIND. Google just released it's more unified messaging app, called Hangouts (replaces Talk) but when I try to confirm my WIND number, it eventually gives me a notification that confirmation failed. I have a friend on Rogers that had no issues confirming his number. I don't suppose anyone else on this forum has tried? I do recall people have had similar issues with some of Google's other services.
