ATT Smartphones and Data Plans: Upgrade Questions

Hello,

I currently have a family plan consisting of 4 phones:
* Dad: Samsung Galaxy S2 (with Data plan) - still under contract
* Mom: Iphone 4S (with Data plan) - still under contract
* Teen1: Non-smartphone (no data) - No longer on contract
*     Teen2:  Non-smartphone...

Hello,

I currently have a family plan consisting of 4 phones:

Dad: Samsung Galaxy S2 (with Data plan) - still under contract

Mom: Iphone 4S (with Data plan) - still under contract

Teen1: Non-smartphone (no data) - No longer on contract

Teen2: Non-smartphone (no data) - No longer on contract

We have decided to upgrade our Teen's phones to smartphones as well, under the shared mobile data plan (total cost with 4 smartphones & 10 Gig + unlimited voice and text = about $230, which is roughly equivalent to what I am paying currently).

So, here is our plan:

(1) Use the kids upgrade options to get Iphone 5 (to replace my wifes 4s) and Galaxy S4 (to replace my Skyrocket2). And then buy two unlocked Android phones (off Amazon or Ebay) for the kids - mainly for texting and web surfing. (The original Iphone4s and GalaxyS2 are unlocked and will be used by our parents when they travel.)

1a. If we do this, can we just swap the SIM cards (from Iphone4s - Iphone5) and (GalaxyS2 - GalaxyS4)

1b. What do we need to do to activate the data plan for our kids unlocked phones - do we just go to ATT corporate store and buy new SIM cards, and just tell them we changed phones?

If there is a better or a cleaner way to achieve our objectives, please kindly share it with us?

Last night I was playing hacking around with a TMobile Note2. I installed a stock international N1705 rom, slipped in a a regular ATT data sim, changed to the broadband apn and I noticed the signal was much lower then a another Note2 I have. I thought I screwed something up but when I went into the diagnostic menu, it was connected to LTE! I googled and it appeared that ATT announced LTE in my area 5/22/2013. :hehehe:

We all love smartphones. Without them, Pocketnow wouldn’t exist, and my decades-old dream of living in Star Trek‘s universe of awesome pocketable gadgets would never have been realized. It’s fair to say that everyone here -editors and readers alike- understands and appreciates smartphones and other connected devices. But sometimes we take our eye off the significance of the infrastructure supporting those devices. Sure, we take a peek at carrier equipment here and there, but too often the billions of dollars’ worth of network hardware that enables our portable gadgets goes completely unappreciated. Unfortunately, it often takes a calamity, along with the associated disaster recovery efforts, to remind us that cellular networks are there – and they’re not invulnerable to attack from either natural or man-made forces.

That’s where AT&T’s Network Disaster Recovery Team comes in. When an earthquake, tornado, hurricane, or a man-made catastrophe damages or destroys part of that crucial communications infrastructure, this special division of the nation’s second-largest carrier mobilizes to get the phones ringing and the modems chirping again. Since its inception, AT&T has poured over $600 million into the program, which today boasts over 320 self-contained mobile equipment trailers manned by an all-volunteer force of engineers and network technicians. These people train constantly to make certain they’re ready to restore communications capability to an affected area as quickly as possible, and one of those training exercises is happening right now in Hartford, Connecticut.

AT&T has for some time been eager to show off its network improvements, and the company was more than happy to show us around the training exercise as it unfolded next to Rentschler Stadium, just a little ways down the road from Pocketnow’s Boston offices. We were given in-depth access to most of the over thirty pieces of equipment on-site, from SatCOLTS (Satellite Cell-sites On Light Trucks) to HAZMAT trailers to huge diesel generators and more, all of it driven from a secret location to Hartford in a massive convoy – a convoy whose lone purpose is to reconnect people following a major disaster. Other wireless carriers maintain network-recovery teams, but we haven’t seen them up close. It’s hard to imagine they’d miss the opportunity to boast about them if they matched the scale of AT&T’s effort.

We were given a stark reminder of the need for teams like this one just yesterday, in the form of the devastating tornado that struck Oklahoma – and indeed, three members of the team flew from Hartford to the affected communities just this morning to do their job: repairing the network. To get a sense of just how crucial communications are to disaster management, how many resources it takes to restore them, and how dedicated AT&T is to doing so, watch our video tour below. And the next time you pull out your smartphone to check the feeds or text a friend, remember how much goes on behind the scenes to make it possible.

I have noticed the Data speeds for the last week have dropped from 2-3Mbps to anywhere from .05-.5Mbps in southwestern Colorado Springs. I have called ATT a few times and the low level guys don't really know anything but I have talked to a couple T2 reps and a Network Engineer and they seem to think the drop in speeds is due to LTE being installed. They said it looks like the date for completion is May 30th, but that seems like a long time to suffer with awful data speeds if the LTE install is the culprit. For people who have had ATT through an LTE install is this to be expected? Two weeks of almost unusable data before a launch? I don't know if I should keep bugging ATT about the crappy data or if this is normal.

I had another quick question. I downloaded an app on my Nexus 4 called Network Signal Info and it says I'm connected to HSPA 14.4. Will this be upgraded to HSPA 21 when LTE is launched due to the backhaul needed for LTE? I thought ATT had upgraded most its footprint to HSPA 21 at least.
Edit: I guess it drops down to 14.4 to save battery since I am on 21.6 when using the internet while not on wifi so ignore this part of the question.

You can base your info on the following but you will have to edit it to fit in the web forms:

"AT&T has raised the price on every wireless line in service by $.61 a month by adding a new fee to every bill, which they explain as follows:"MOBILITY ADMINISTRATIVE FEEEffective May 1, 2013, the Administrative Fee will be $0.61 per line per month. The Administrative Fee helps defray certain expenses AT&T incurs, including but not limited to: (a) charges AT&T or its agents pay to interconnect with other carriers to deliver calls from AT&T customers to their customers; and (b) charges associated with cell site rents and maintenance."

This is a baloney way of saying "price increase", and is a blatant violation of basic contract law which does not allow the changing of terms after the beginning of a bilateral agreement. The vast majority of ATT customers have 2-year contract agreements which prevent their switching carriers without paying a huge penalty clause.

The ATT Wireless Agreement reads: "If we increase the price of any of the services to which you subscribe, beyond the limits set forth in your customer service summary... you may terminate this agreement without paying an early termination fee or returning or paying for any promotional items."

CTIA Consumer Code reads: "Carriers will not modify the material terms of their subscribers' contracts in a manner that is materially adverse to subscribers without providing a reasonable advance notice of a proposed modification and allowing subscribers a time period of not less than 14 days to cancel their contracts with no early termination fee."

ATT claims that the price for the service remains the same and are only adding a "fee". What's from stopping AT&T from adding an additional $50/month fee and not letting customers out of their contract?

$.61 doesn't sound like much, but some people have multiple lines. In addition, multiplied by 115.78 million customers, AT&T makes an extra $847 million a year from this dishonest price hike.

As it is not any kind of tax or government mandated charge, the new fee should be included in the basic price displayed in advertising and informational material. The new fee should only be charged on new contracts beginning after the increase, and existing contract customers must be allowed to either reject the price hike or be allowed to terminate their service without penalty, as the contract has already been breached by the carrier."

I don't know what to do, but it's irritating the hell out of me. All I know is that this behavior probably started around 2 months ago when I changed my phone number.
