I had the chance to test out Rogers Toronto area LTE network last Friday. I've been bugging Rogers for a while to let me test their Toronto LTE network before it officially launches. I finally convinced them to let me try it with a few conditions... a) it took place in one of their red Rogers vans and b) I couldn't take the service with me after the drive.

Anyways, there are many problems with my test which actually caused me to ponder whether I should write anything at all. First off, Rogers could have taken me on a route that is flattering to Rogers. I only got to run the test for about 45 mins. Their LTE network is not public yet so I basically have the entire network to myself but at the same time it may not be ready yet. There could be some last minute network tuning that needs to be done. The test was run around 1pm when networks are probably not that loaded since everyone's at work.

Google has announced that it is in operation in Spain as a MVNO or mobile virtual network operator. Google bought up a bunch of bulk network capacity from existing carriers and then handed the SIMs out to employees for testing. That testing was down with the Nexus S handset and apparently each of the cards accesses one of three various carriers including Orange, Movistar, and Vodafone.

Speaking at a Goldman Sachs investor conference here Wednesday, Lowell McAdam, Verizon's CEO said that his company hasn't taken a stance in the debate whether AT&T should be allowed to buy T-Mobile. AT&T announced its plans to buy T-Mobile in March for $39 billion. But the U.S. Department of Justice sued AT&T last month to block the deal, stating that it would harm consumers to lose one of the four major competitors in the wireless market. AT&T has vowed to fight the DOJ in court. Sprint Nextel, the No. 3 wireless carrier in the U.S. has been among the most vocal opponents to the deal.

But Verizon, which owns the largest wireless carrier in the U.S. and is AT&T's biggest rival, has remained silent on whether it feels the U.S. should block the deal. ...

Sprint reportedly capping its mobile hotspot plans October 2nd
By Brad Molen posted Sep 21st 2011 6:26PM
If Sprint's myriad policy changes are part of the company's strategy update, perhaps we're not looking forward to October 7th's event after all. The latest bout in a series of gut-punching cost-cutting moves is the elimination of "unlimited" in the Now Network's $30 mobile hotspot add-on; according to a leaked employee memo uncovered by SprintFeed, October 2nd is the dreadful date in which all unlimited plans (sorry Sprintsters, there's no grandfathering) will be given a limit of 5GB, and any overage will be charged five cents per MB. It appears that only phones will be affected, leaving tableteurs safe for now. So if you're currently using the hotspot feature, enjoy the last few solid days of sweet downloading while you can.

From the official Windows Phone Blog:

For months, we and dozens of our partner companies have been laying the groundwork for the Windows Phone 7.5 update—and making solid progress. As a result, we now expect to start rolling it out in the next week or two. At that time, we’ll also refresh the Where’s My Phone Update? table to reflect the worldwide rollout status.

Just read at wmpoweruser.com that Telus is going to update Windows Phone 7 to 7.5 (Mango) in September.
Here is the page that confirms it : http://www.telusmobility.com/en/QC/L...o-002814.shtml.

I don't know if it applies only to the Optimus 7. Checked for update earlier today via Zune. Not yet available.

Hopefully it will be there shortly. I can't wait to ugrade!

AT&T Inc. (T) is approaching smaller rivals including MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS) and Leap Wireless International Inc. (LEAP) to sell spectrum and subscribers as part of an attempt to save its $39 billion takeover of T-Mobile USA Inc., said two people with direct knowledge of the situation.
AT&T has also reached out to CenturyLink Inc. (CTL), Dish Network Corp. (DISH) and Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) to gauge their interest in buying assets, said the people, who declined to be identified because the talks are private.
AT&T, based in Dallas, is seeking ways to salvage its agreement to acquire T-Mobile USA from Bonn-based Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE) after the Justice Department sued on Aug. 31 to stop the deal. The talks with competitors are preliminary and may not lead to a deal, and the Justice Department may also deem the remedies insufficient, the people said.

The problem is that Sprint really has no money to purchase either customers or spectrum. Is AT&T also financing the sale?

I know Verizon has mentioned that they will be starting a new network optimization program to keep heavy users in check but the details have been pretty vague until now. It appears that starting 9/15/11 Verizon will begin to slow down the data connection of users on 3G phones and Internet devices after they go over 2GB of data each month. The document I read describes in detail who will be "managed" and these are the requirements before you are throttled....... ...
