Amazon's long-rumored Android-based tablet made its debut today. It sports a highly customized version of Android, has a 7" multi-touch IPS display, runs Android apps, has Wi-Fi, a dual-core processor and 8GB of on-device storage.

The Kindle Fire will launch November 15th for $199. Any takers?

NEW YORK (AP) — Apple is inviting journalists to its Cupertino, Calif. headquarters next week for an iPhone-related event on Oct. 4.

The invitation Apple Inc. sent on Tuesday does not go into details. It says "let's talk iPhone," suggesting that the usually secretive company is likely to unveil the next iteration of its popular smartphones.

In light of HP shutting down webOS device operations, Microsoft's ever-vigilant Windows Phone 7 evangelist Brandon Watson posted the following tweet yesterday in an attempt to lure disappointed webOS developers over to Windows Phone 7:

To Any Published WebOS Devs: We'll give you what you need to be successful on #WindowsPhone, incl.free phones, dev tools, and training, etc.

Facebook has released a standalone mobile messaging app that ties in with its web-based messaging service.

It is currently available for iOS and Android with BlackBerry support coming soon.

Netflix Releases Their Android App, For Select Phones

Today Netflix released its first Android app, which will initially be available to a select number of phones. Those phones are:

Samsung Nexus S with 2.3+
HTC Incredible with 2.2+
HTC Nexus One with 2.2+
HTC EVO 4G with 2.2+
HTC G2 with 2.2+

We are thrilled to announce that we have begun to roll out a Netflix application for the Android platform. We are making the free app available for download from Android Market. The Market download will initially be available only on select phones that currently have the requisite playback support. We expect to quickly add to the number of phones that can download from Android Market as we work with ecosystem partners to expand playback support.

If your device is not officially supported you can try this download: Netflix.apk NOTE: The device must be rooted, and build.prop edited in order to work fully. (Thanks deathtrip)

Verizon and AT&T (and T-Mobile) Blocking Free Tethering Apps In Android Market

It appears that all the major U.S. carriers other than Sprint are beginning to block installation of free tethering apps like EasyTether and PdaNet through the Android Market.

You can still get them by sideloading the .apk's, but the days of unfettered free tethering seem to be coming to an end.

What do you think about this? Is it your data to use however you wish, or are the carriers right to charge an extra fee for tethering?

Amazon's new Android Appstore includes a feature that allows you to "test drive" an app for 30 minutes before buying. It essentially creates a virtual Android device and launches the app inside it where you can play around with it before deciding to buy it. It currently only works from your computer, test drives aren't support on mobile devices.
