I think if the website let you upgrade, you can upgrade. . . and keep the iphone - upgrade does not require you to return anything.
Since you don't get a discount with the iPhone it doesn't affect your upgrade eligibility. This is for existing AT&T users, I believe people who activated the iPhone as a new phone won't be able to do this.

I picked up the V9 today. Overall the phone seemed to have a good build quality. However, the call quality was not nearly as good as my V3xx. The V3xx was clearer and louder. People that I talked to on the V9 said it didn't sound that good while they liked the V3xx when I called back on it. If it weren't for these issues, I would have kept it. I also think the RF was a tad weaker. This may be due to the mostly metal case. With the V3xx, it's all plastic so it isn't as critical of how you hold it to get good reception. The V9 is a little heavier also and it's noticable when carrying it in my pocket. I could have gotten used to that. I'm not sure that I liked the keypad either. Well this is just my opinion YMMV.
