Net 10 working on Android
I have a rooted unlocked android g1 running cynogenmod custom firmware and I am able to use a net 10 sim out of an activated net10 phone, for making calls and texting, but I cannot use the internet. Net10 phones can do GPRS internet deducting 1 minuet airtime for one minuet online. I cannot recharge or check my minuets (they might be able to be checked by text request) HOWEVER I do get a text from net10 warning me of low minuets and end of service date. Additionally the net10 sim in android does not get its minuets deducted for use (bad). Periodically there is some over the air code that locks the sim (or fails to keep it unlocked) at which point I must put the sim back in the net10 phone power it up until it has service, I can then return it to the android and use it for from hours to my record of just over 3 days between sim locks. I have observed that when riding in a car from network to network the sim lock happens with greater periodicity, I theorize this is due to the sim not being granted access to the new network towers due to checks and balances between the sim the net10 phone, net10 and the owner of the tower not properly handshaking.
my hunch is the towers only keep track of the total system wide net10 minuets and bill net10. The accounting on the net10 side is done in the phone so the abuse minuets are a loss to the net10 service, and I would not want to cause them undue expense that would require them to raise the costs of their service, but these are my observations of trying to make use of their service on my phone of choice.
It all comes back round to choice and that is what we the people want!
net10 should release an app making their sim's work in android phones :-)
I wish more carriers offered a cheap (25-35$) data only 5GB plans for GSM phones, then I would just use my skype # primarily and carry the net10 for emergency calls on long trips away from civilization.
