This question has always puzzles me with the 647, 416, and 905 area codes.. (and the given fact that area codes means ultimately nothing in the wireless world!)
Personally it came to question recently again when I made a call from my home to Richmond Hill (which I assume is no charge since I make Vaughn calls at the time but who knows!)
So I'm wondering.. from a perspective of a Toronto user (number activated in Toronto),
what is the local calling area and what is long distance?
roughly: Campbellville to the west, Ajax to the east, as far north to some places as Tottenham and Georgetown
There are local calling area lists available. I haven't seen one for Rogers Wireless but I have seen a list for Bell Mobility local coverage on the bell.ca site.

There may be small differences in the calling areas when comparing Bell Mobility to Rogers Wireless.

In Richmond Hill, you're near the northern local calling area for the GTA. Many people living in Richmond Hill have 416 numbers, as they're still in the local calling area.

Also, remember that 647 is an "overlay" to 416. The two area codes have identical characteristics.
by referring area code, if u have a 416/647 number, the whole GTA and york region are pretty much covered as local calls.
if u have a markham/richmond hill 905 number, calling any 416/647 and 905 aurora/new market/vaugh numbers are local calls. however, calling any 905 number in peel region (brampton, missisauga, oakville) from markham/richmond hill 905 are long distance
UNLESS, you have an *ancient* urban fido plan. hehehe.

Yes, I'm pretty sure even calls from Newmarket are considered "local", if I'm not mistakened. Or at least Aurora. It's a pretty large area.

Now, last time that I was in Newmarket... with my TO number, I call Markham and it was a local call...
just dont dial 1 in front of your number and you'll know if it's local or not...
Rogers had charged me long distance calls on my cell when I was in Markham calling to Mississauga.... they had to reverse the charges because there was another log of the same number that wasn't charged. Funny thing is, they claimed "I connected to a Markham cell tower" which didn't make sense.

since when does having a 416/647 area code number suddenly expand markham's local calling area? Isn't it the place you are that determines where you can call that is local? It shouldn't make a difference what the area code of the cell phone is.
my point is this:
when you are in markham with a 416 number and call mississauga, it's considered a call from Markham to Mississauga (not toronto 416 to missisauga)
in the other example above with the user calling newmarket to markham with a toronto number: it's simply a call from newmarket to markham and the fact that a toronto cell phone is used is irrelevant
