Person dies after answering cell phone while charging

I got this email from my friend:

That isn't so much possible, the votage and amerage isn't high enough to kill you let alone even hurt you coming out of a charger.

Good thing I use a standing desktop charger... :D

That email says his parent's found him and then the article says that his wife and son found him..

And man, last time I checked being 31 was not considered being a youth.. Somethin's fishy, plus it's easy to make a newspaper..

Atleast once we all did that when out nokia 3390s was recharging, and we received a call.

You have to be pretty stupid to believe this. As bump said, the voltage isn't that high. It's SEVERLY toned voming out of the ac adaptor...

A guy at my work got shocked with the forklift charger, that things uses 4 gauge cables and pumps out almost 100 amps I beileve, and it just hurt his arm, not killed him, heck, only 20 amps usually comes into the house from a plant. While granted it only takes .4 amps to kill a humna, the body has anywhere between 500,000-2,000,000 ohms of resistance, it just ain't possible to kill a person with a phone charger. And this coming from india is no suprise, they have all sorts or crazy tales over there (a few indian friends supply them all to me)

so did this really happen?

I also said that too, in fact I went in to striking detail in my later post. Most phone chargers put out no more than 1 amp, which makes it very corny.

Wouldn't the batt of the phone give out before you could be shocked? It does complete the electrical circuit so wouldn't that asorb a majority of the surge?

The wire charging the phone would actually ignite like a fuse and pop, that high of a surge would melt that wire no problem unless it was the diameter of boat anchor rope

I can vouch for that. I bought a DJ mixer on ebay for 20 bucks a few yearss ago to see if I could fix. Well, after plugging it in and such I determined the transformer was blown not long after I shocked myself 4 times on this thing playing with the wires BEFORE the transformer...meaning I basically stuck a knife into a socket 4 times. My arm just dead for a minute and it hurt, but obviously not enough to learn my lesson the first time, or the second, or even the third!

I don't buy this story for one bit. The only thing that would be halfway believable would be that india is 220 volts (which they are, http://www.world-of-islands.com/Info...voltage_en.htm) and something happened in the neighborhood to deregulate the amount of current flowing.

Yea, I've been shocked so many times by by sockets I can't count them. I got shocked by a SUBMERGED power strip in my basement, was soaked in water and it was a little shock, but it didn't kill me.

i don't buy this story but lots of you gfuys are WAY off on your assesments of electricity. there is enough voltage and amperage in a wirst watch battery to kill a human being. if the electrical shock travels through your heart it CAN kill you no matter how low the voltage, or amperage.

the anticdotal stories about how you guys have gotten shocked before and did not die are not really relevant. i can introduce you to a guy that has gone over the falls at niagra in a barrel and he didn't die but the guy that did it before him DID die. are you trying to say that the other guy did not die because the guy i know didn't?

my sistser had a car accident doing 60 MPH and she didn't die but i know somone that had a car accident going 30MPH and he got killed. is he really alive somewhere because my sister did not die?

i won't pretend to know a great deal about electrical theory but i do work in construction and i work with many union trained college educated electricians. some of them have been shocked with great amounts of electricity but every last one of them would tell you that you are a fool to deduce that charge was not of a lethal level just because they had the good fortune of surviving.

final word, take a 9 volt battery and put it on your tounge. you will not die and you will get a cool little shock. route that same charge through your heart and you will be dead immediatley.

I'm not sure if I understand your idea correctly, but I think in this case, the current for the shock doesn't come from the battery, but rather from the charger which is plugged into the wall outlet.

True yet false. Household electricity can't kill you by itself. The reason why so many people die from electrical shocks with medium or low voltage equipment is because our heart operates on electricity, powered by the brain. If an external current is strong enough to disrupt the normal flow of current to the heart, it will cause the heart to stop. At this point, the electrocuted person is not dead yet, and once withdrawn from the electrical source, a CPR can get the heart running again. That's the problem. If your heart stops because of an electrical shock, but there is no one around to CPR you to restart your heart, there is where the death comes as the brain can't survive more than a couple of minutes without the oxigen pumped into it from the heart.

Only when shocked by high voltage equipment, the electricity would be powerful enough to burn a person from inside-out, and then, no CPR can revive the victim.

Anyobdy bother to look at the name of the newspaper? This is an indian paper, an electricity in places like india aint very good. I was in pakistan last year and my phone died whilst charging, the amount of electricity coming out of sockets in unstable and things usually short or blow up randomly when charging

Even in a controlled environment that was enclosed and with an optimum fuel to air mixture, they were unable to cause ignition with a cellphone. Considering how open an actual gas station is, whatever chance there was in the experiment is reduced even further.

The cause they found is static discharge by the person. In fact, if you're a young female you're MORE likely to spark an explosion, because it was found that females after starting the pump would get back into the car for whatever reason and then get back out without grounding themselves to free the charge.

It is this act of entering and exiting the car that builds up a static charge is released near the fumes escaping the gas tank hole and further exacerbated by attempting to pull out the nozzle. Old folks aren't as risky, since they tend to touch the car when they brace themselves climbing out.

its not false, it happened before, i've read it in the local newspaper
its caused by the ethanol mixture, apparently it had a lower *or higher* flashpoint
it killed the guy who uses the phone and a mechanic in the garage
