Expiration - per Terms I remember(?), use it every 90 days, and you're good. Not easy-to-remember, that. (edit: billable usage, that is. Like send a text.)

Lyca - for the frugal mobile

Free SIM via snail crossed the USA in the expected 10 business days. Their list of local dealers led me to a general reseller unaware of the new MVNO; no problem: they knew where to look.

Should your OP title be specific: "How can I limit a Sidekick LX 2009 to voice/SMS?"

That said, I plan to test a Lycamobile SIM on one. If I haven't activated data, it should be confined to voice and SMS; if I swap in another SIM with only data active ... what then

Ignore deadlines at your (money's) peril

Last time I checked, $10 only gets you another 30 days; $20 gets you 90 days.

Ignore deadlines at your (money's) peril

First of all, ignore a deadline and lose your entire balance.

Second, "very kind" is a relative term - it's "kind" for a cartel member to demand $20+ every 90 days for literally no service, just...
