That I can second, third, and fourth. You are very right. GPRS in rural areas sucks. In Europe, I don't see anything but 3G an artificial throttling to 2G. And you are right it never hangs.
Not on T-Mobile's 2g Roaming Agreements.

Not true... Using an unlocked Verizon iPhone 5s for the past 2 months in Europe.
I've had 0 issues with FaceTime Audio/Skype all over Europe and South America. I have been using a VPN to get to the US though so that may have something to do with it.
That and iMessage between my family and significant other and close friends have been lifesavers.
It will be 2G data. I've managed fine using twitter, whatsapp, apple maps, yelp, hangouts, and a few others. FaceTime Audio has been a lifesaver here though.

It will be 2g speeds. I've been to all the places you are going only saw 2g speeds. Even if it says 3G.
