This is the third such sale Target has had this fall. However, before the first one this fall, the previous one was about a year earlier. (I picked up a couple of more cards this afternoon.)

EDIT: Excerpted from Virgin Mobile USA's website

    Q. What is the Service Preserver?

    A. Top-Up $90 within any 3 day period and Virgin Mobile's Service Preserver will keep your service active for a whole year.

Just add $90 to your account within any 3-day period by using a credit/debit card, registered PayPal account, or Top-Up cards. We'll send you a Virgin Alert letting you know that you've qualified for the Service Preserver. Reply to that message within 60 days, and you're in! We'll keep your service active for an entire year. That means there's no need to worry about Topping-Up every 90 days to keep your service from expiring. Just Top-Up whenever you need more airtime.

There is no alert sent if you use the Service Preserver Card. Just apply the card to your account and you're done!

Service Preserver - it's the worry-free way to Pay As You Go.

Does anyone know if the service preserver option is still available? If not, is the $15 top up option the absolute cheapest option to keep the phone alive?

I've been a VM customer for 4 years and I've never seen a better deal on TopUp cards than the Target deal at a retailer. If you're willing to buy on eBay, you might luck into a better deal.

The $15 Auto Top Up option is the cheapest option to keep your account open. It's $29.12 a year less expensive than Service Preserver. (Even using a $20 Top Up card every 90 days is $8.83 less expensive per year than service preserver, although probably less convenient.)

But if you buy Top-Up cards on sale (2 $20 cards for $30) then that is actually cheaper cause you get $40 worth of air time for $30.

As long as you add $90 of airtime within 3 days you qualify for the service provider.

It depends, of course, on what you mean by "cheaper." Being able to get 4 $20 cards for $60 and using 1 card every 90 days, which I do myself, costs the same as the $15 Auto Top Up; but you get 33.33% more in services. If you are looking at minimum monthly cost, then the two are equal except for convenience factors. Either way, they are both less expensive than Server Preserver.
