Qpst read my phone perfectly and I removed the dun from the profile and wrote the info to the phone. Whenever I wrote it to the phone, the phone lost all service for almost a minute but then was fine. During that time, it did make it to where qpst showed my phone as not ready or something. I reconnected the phone and it recognized it again and the dun was still gone.

After that, I went to connect to a network and selected dial up then my phone as the modem. everything seemed correct but then I tried to connect (I used #777 as the dial #, then my #########@vzw3g.com as the user and vzw as the password. the computer then tried to connect and I then received a message saying "unable to connect" I went to diagnose the problem and it said it appeared to be working fine. At this point, I dont know what to do and am in dire need of help. Does #777 not work or did I do something wrong? I appreciate any help anyone can provide!

Thanks to Ken for getting me this far!!
If you aren't on Verizon's network, it won't work.

That thought crossed my mind as well, but EsotericPC mentioned (in a PM) that the phone doesn't respond at all during the dial-up process. Is this expected behavior when out of the Verizon network?

I've never tried it when out of area. What happens when on the Verizon network?

    I actually....

I researched to no end and found a very similar circumstance in which someone had to turn off their wireless connection (on my Sony Vaio, there is a switch on the front to enable or disable wireless). Well, I disabled it and everything works fine! Go figure!

I appreciate everyone's willingness to help! Thank you!

Well, I got this to work in about 35 seconds... THANKS! Now I'm scared to use it... My question is - what exactly ARE the repercussions of this, and has anyone actually been caught?

Are you on a Nationwide plan or an America's Choice plan?

Because on a Nationwide plan, data is $1.99/mb. The old America's Choice plans still accrue data by the minute (nights and weekends free).

If I have the vcast add on, will the usage of the DUN feature be included in the vcast or added separately in "minutes used"? I have never been clear on this. Thanks.

    Well..

I am not sure what plan I have as far as name wise but I get 1200 minutes a month, nights and weekends free (which I share with my wife on the family share plan). I think I can send 50 text messages or something like that before I am charged (it isn't many from what I recall).

Anyways, I tethered my K1m to my laptop and used it to surf the web a lot and I also shared that connection to with my Xbox 360 to play Call of Duty 4 on Xbox Live a few hours. Most of you said and probably think I was crazy but Verizon only charged me a total of $14.00 total for the month. I do not remember the amount of data they said I used but will try to find the old bill. I only used it for about 3 weeks until I got a USB720 modem from Verizon and their $60 a month data plan.

I have found (through the usage log) that Xbox Live does not use as much data as a lot of people think. I think this is due to the fact you have the game playing in your console and so does everyone else so the transfer is not as great. That is a theory so I could be wrong.

Nonetheless, I have had the modem since 3/2/08 and have yet to go over 1 gig of usage. I play Call of Duty 4 about 3 or so hours a night and about 3 days out of the week. The weekend I play for 5 or 6 hours a day. It is weird because sometimes I will see the usage be 90 MBs for the session and other times it is only about 30 MBs for areound the same period of time. I have been very pleased with the data card and even though the map shows I am on the outskirts of the network for Rev A, I get 2 or 3 bars on my modem so it's all good! I highly recommend it and suggest the tethering only be used when you are out of town or temporarily until you get the data plan.

VCast gives you unlimited data for the phonenumber@vzw3g.com user (which is what your phone uses to authenticate with the tower/Verizon when you use Mobile Web/pic messaging/VCast/etc).

Since the DUN hack has you change the phonenumber@dun.vzw3g.com username to phonenumber@vzw3g.com, then DUN is seen/authenticated just like any of the phone's other normal data functions.

So, Verizon doesn't know you are using DUN, your DUN session is seen like normal data usage and is covered under your VCast plan.

Of course if they did an audit on your account they could easily tell from the log files that you were not browsing the web from your phone (based on the url's and timing and whatnot).

If you need to have a faster internet connection then the aircard/usb modem is the way to go because it can utilize Rev A instead of Rev 0, which runs a good deal faster than you can get off of your phone. I believe Humpa told me this in a post a month ago and he was definitely right (if that was you, thank you!). Nonetheless, Humpa and Ken830 know what they are talking about so I would definitely trust them.

In my situation, I needed the fastest connection available so I could play Xbox Live. I generally get the same speeds as DSL, generally a little faster. I did a speed check when I was using my phone and I got around 250-300 (with sometimes a 400 burst) download and only about 100 to 150 upload. Now I am getting 700-900 down and 200 to 250 up. That matters when you are talking about gaming

I have a Maxx Ve, and have been tethering to my laptop and desktop whenever my regular connection goes down. Its been working great, getting EVDO speeds on occasion. But this morning, I received a block page from Verizon stating that my device wasn't allowed for DUN. Have they caught on, and figured out another way to block, or has an update or something reverted my settings that allowed me to connect in the first place?

I was just going to post a new thread asking this same question. I have a friend who has been using DUN for ages and all of a sudden yesterday he got the same msg. I also notice about 4 people over at Hacktherazr are asking the same thing and all have stated the same thing. Sounds to me like VZW has caught on and close up the whole everyone has been using for ages.

As Humpa has stated in a recent post, Verizon can't tell whether your connection is originating from the handset or a tethered device. So there is no "hole" that they can remotely close on a phone that is already out of their hands.

I guess what they can do is perhaps block certain pages that no one would ever connect to if using a handset only. That would be my best guess, but I've been known to be wrong before...

The people that are having problems are probably connecting differently.
Perhaps they are using the 1x work-around that doesn't require you to edit the NAI settings/username string. In which case perhaps they can now detect that somehow since maybe that connection is different in someway from a normal phone data connection like you get when you simply edit that DUN NAI username string?

.... or perhaps they have some coincidental problem.
