    Education & Identification

Fakes are difficult to tell from the originals on casual observation. The slideshow photos you’ll find in this section will help illustrate commonly encountered physical characteristics of fake products. It is not, however, a comprehensive guide because each product may have unique properties. The best way to identify these characteristics is to compare them to a known, original product based on the following criteria:

    Electrical Construction
    • External power connector is loose or mounted too deeply or is sticking out.
    • Mold lines on plastic are rough or “sprues” are present (sprues are small, rough pieces of plastic left over from the molding process).
    • Battery is not secured or uses inferior mounting tape.
    • Chipset and battery manufacturer do not match Motorola original.

    Performance
    • Audio often has static or is muffled.
    • Range is often poor.
    • May not be compatible with many phones or certain functions on phones.
    • Battery performance and talk time may be severely diminished.
    • Plastic and rubber parts will often break prematurely.

    Good heads up, YoDude.

Regarding the i880, this one's ironic:

External power connector is loose or mounted too deeply or is sticking out.

As devices plugged into the i880's bottom connector are loose and tend to wobble, one might wonder if the handset is couterfeit.

    Yup, a few ironies
Plastic and rubber parts will often break prematurely.
What's a "premature break"? Are there "mature" breaks like grandma's hips or suttin'?

Also the thread title might indicate at first glance that the guidebook itself is "Counterfeit" or perhaps even a guide for counterfeitting...
