Ok, here's a breakdown for those that don't understand this concept, and those that might be too new to the forums and the world of Nextel to understand it. If you want a good deal on a Nextel phone, and aren't finding it online at a website, in the Buy/Sell/Trade section here, or on eBay or wherever, you're only choice is to actually call Nextel and find out what they'll give you. Asking here what kind of a deal you can get is simply a moot point. Everyone can tell you what kind of a deal they got, but that has nothing at all to do with what you will get, nothing at all! Your ONLY way to find out what you can get from Nextel is to call them yourself.
If you're currently in contract, don't expect a whole lot of freebies/discounts/etc unless you have PROOF that your service is not what it should be and you are in fact in an area that is covered by Nextel according to them (this proof is in the form of calls to submit network tickets with problems you've had--dropped calls, No Service, etc, etc, etc).
If you are out of contract, then this is the time to get the best deal on a new phone or a new rate plan or a few features added to your account for less than the advertised price--this is when people have the most luck with the retentions department.
Now, the key to remember in all this is that it is solely based on who you talk to in the retentions department as to what you can get. If they've had a bad day, if the last customer was extremely rude to them, if they had a flat tire on the way in to work in the rain, then your chances of getting discounts and freebies are lower. If they've had a good day and every caller has been nice to them, and they were just given a raise--your chances are better. Retention reps and customer service reps with Nextel are just like every one of us--human, they want and hope that you can respect them as much as you'd like them to respect you. The person you talk to is someone that you want to help you, so treat them with respect.
Another thing, when you call retentions, if you threaten to cancel service or are going to use that as your reason for why you are wanting a better deal--be prepared to follow through with that. The retentions department is NOT the "I want a deal" department. If you act like a moron and are rude to the rep, you can bet that your sevice will be cancelled for you the first time you mention it--the retentions department is not REQUIRED to give everyone, or anyone, a deal.
Retentions phone numbers (posted throughout the forums in many other threads by many other people):
800-683-1602 (Corporate/Government Individual Accounts)
866-235-1185 (Small Business/Individual Consumer Accounts)
(if anyone has other links they'd like to see added, pm them to me)
Now, here's what can be posted in this thread:
Feel free to post the deal you got from retentions in this thread. No discussion of the deals, no blatantly stupid "how did you get that deal" questions (if you read the rest of this post, you'll know how ), nothing else--just post the deal you got, and whether you were in or out of contract, the number of network tickets you submitted or if you were having service issues or whatever....

Have you read the rules lately? They're usually in a sticky at the top of the page.

About 7-8 months ago I was out of contract and wanting the i870. I called retentions and all the pms'ing rep would offer me was a a $50 one time service credit if I renewed my contract for 2 years. I asked about getting a deal on the 870 and the price she gave me,$236 or close to it, was higher than the price I could have gotten from telesales. Needless to say, I didn't accept.
Two days later I called back and got a different rep. This time I started the coversation by saying that I was calling back to accept the offer I was give 2 days earlier. I said that I was offered the 870 for $49, 200 bonus minutes a month for 2 years and 15% off of my bill for 2 years. I got the idea to ask for these based on posts from other users here that claimed to have gotten these perks on renewel, so I knew it was possible. Anyhow, she looked at my account and said that she sees where I had called, but that there were not any notes about this offer and why didn't I accept such a great offer at the time? I said that I had spotty service and that even a great offer is useless if I can't get a good signal in my area, but that I had thought about it and decided to give it another chance. She put me on hold and then came back and said that the lowest she could sell me the 870 for was $99, but that there was a $50 rebate to bring it to $49. (I said I guess that is what the previous rep had meant) lol. She then said that I could either have the 200 bonus minutes a month or the 15%, but not both. I tried to talk her into it, but she wouldn't budge, so I took the 200 minutes.
To sum up, final deal was 870 for $49 after rebate and 200 bonus minutes a month for 2 years. Not bad at all. I plan on doing the same thing when my contract expires to get the ic902. Good luck
i got lucky about two monts ago i got my wife an i870 and they messed up and gave me the two year price but did not extend my contract so when the i880 dropped ofcourse i wanted that also so just like everone else my order got delayed because everone wanted it but that worked out for me i got hooked up with a rep and we became phone buddys when it was all said and done i got two i880's 100% free yah beat that one ...
I got a brand new i560 + sero plan w/ 1000 anytime, 7pm n/w with unlimited everything else, at 30$ a month, $37 after taxes, with a 69.99credit so 2 months free...

OOh i forgot i also got 300 bonus minutes for life Or until i dont have there services, plus free internet plus my regular service of 300 minute with free incoming
I just got off the phone with the retentions department and i was told something that might be helpful to other people in my same position(out of contract).
If you call Nextel tell and tell them you want to port your number out they will not by law(the rep told me) be able to offer you any "new prices on anything." So I had to call back and tell them i am looking into canceling my account.
Now once i called back and inquired about canceling, the rep asked me what kind of phone would keep me around. I said the i880. This is the deal they gave me. A i880 for $150 with no activation and free over night shipping. I did have to pay the tax. I thought this was a fare deal so I accepted it. I think I might have been able to get a little more off but did not want to push this guy.
i880 for $180 from someone I know in retention. I am in the contract and my contract was not extended. Nice thread. About time ... we need threads like this
I'm reviving and sticking this thread. Please use it for its intended purposes. Noobs--read this and learn whats possible when dealing with retentions. Not everyone that joins these forums needs to start a thread on how to get the best price on their phone.
Sometimes we just don't know how good we are... I kept asking and she kept giving...
Sometimes we get these crazy kind of deals...
I got a really good retentions rep today. We were considering switching over to SouthernLINC. They have some pretty good deals for new customers. So... I get the retentions rep on the phone and explain that I'm contemplating either canceling and getting a new agreement under my wifes name or I'm going over to SouthernLINC... so that I can take advantage of the better deals. She asked what phones... a pair of i880's with an i560 would be nice. She pulls up the SouthernLINC site and matches their pricing on all three phones... $99 for each i880 and $39 for the i560... PLUS she tells me I get the $50 rebate on EACH (rebate form already printed) making my final cost $90 for all three phones... PLUS free shipping and no upgrade/activation charges.... PLUS free mobile to mobile for each phone... PLUS free web/data service for one phone... PLUS free Mobile Locator w/500 text messages for one phone. This did require a 2 year contract, but that's not a big deal... our only service where we live is Nextel.
I wanted to switch to the sprint side of nextel because I'm tired of their bland phones so my contract was up on the 23 of December. For some reason my eligibility was not giving me the full discount until May they said. After calling nextel primier care 5 times and going into a retail store that told me to call customer care again I was getting a little PO'd how nobody could fix this situation. Apparently when I claimed insurance on my phone a year ago after it dropped in the water they said that had something to do with it. Anyway it was confusing and vague and I said I did not sign another contract just because I claimed insurance and C.S. said they could not change it. Finally I decided to call contract expiration/cancellation department. Boy it was like a whole other world of help and support. She was so kind and apologized for the run around and told me she would immediately be able to help me and fix the situation. She then asked me what price I was trying to get me the phone at and I told her I wanted the Touch by HTC for 249.99 and she told me she could only do that after a $100 mail in rebate with a 2 year contract which I should have been able to get in the first place. After she read all of the notes and was laughing about it she put me on hold a while and told me that she could get it for me for 249.99 without the $100 mail in rebate. I mean its not much better just less hassle. She was too nice I didn't want to bug her anymore but she game me overnite shipping free. After spending 3 hours on the phone today thats the best deal I could get. She also said the other people at C.S. tried to give me the run around because she saw that I had been changing around my sim card to other phones. I told her sometimes when I go out I like to use my i830 because its smaller can fits in my jeans better and she understood. But geez I didn't realize they know everytime I switch my sim to another phone. I better watch out next time. She also said we are not the government its not a big deal.
