How would you explain MetroPCS ' plans? the cheapest one is $30 for unlimited local calls. Looks like classic city fido - actually cheaper, in fact. Mind you they don't have all major areas covered - neither did city fido.Originally Posted by P910a

If it were all just about economies of scale, then why are our cable companies in line with their American Counterparts. Why are our hydro costs inline with our American counterparts. Your argument that Canada is a huge country with 1/10 the population doesnt cut it. Our cell phone carriers also have 1/10 the infrastructure as in the US. Besides its not like Rogers is planning to offer HSDPA UMTS everywhere. They only will have it in the major centres. Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver are high density urban areas and therefore must have a similiar cost structure. I dont believe we have to be cheeper thatn the US, but come on, we should be somewhere in the ballpark! We don't even offer an unlimited data plan on any GSM carrier. (unless you were grandfathered)
Anyways Rant offer... I just get a little worked up everytime I return from a US business trip and all my collegues are surfing away and watching TV feeds all at a reasonable fixed cost.
someday Ill figure this all out!

Funny how when I lived in the States I had health insurance like almost everyone with a full-time job and the quality of medical care there was much much better than here. You never wait. Salaries are higher in the States for non low-end jobs.

Sorry about that. Opera strikes again. The problem in the US is that they do not take care of the lower classes but in general you will make more money and have greater spending power doing the same job there than here if you are middle class here in can.
you guys in canada have more coverage in more remote places, but they have less population than most of the remote areas of the U.S., but half your population in in Toronto area, Ottowa, Montreal, and Quebec city, which is a VERY VERY small geographical area. id imagine toronto has microcells just like newyork or L.A., so downtown probably has something like 50 to 100 "towers", not 1.
You make a good point: The amount of network equipment required to provide service is proportional to the subscriber base.Originally Posted by alkizmo
I've made this point before: Carriers in the US had to participate in a spectrum auction that cost billions of dollars, even before they started paying for their network buildouts.
In Canada, while the goverment has in the last few years awarded spectrum by auction, the majority of cellular and PCS spectrum was simply given away. This is a huge advantage to Canadian carriers....yet they still have higher pricing charge rediculous "SAF" fees....
Jasee you make a very good point about the cost for canadian carriers to purchase spectrum. Anyways as stated earlier things wont change until there is more competition. And when there is I will have no loyalty to Rogers anymore. I will change in a heartbeat, because they have goughed us for so long. End of my Rant! lol I feel much better![]()
How about this for kicks ... Fido's Early termination Fee will change from a minimum of 100$ up to a maximum of 400$ for every contract started as of feb 1st 2007. If you have a plan on a contract your still under the old 20$ a month or 200$ max penalty but the minute you change your plan you are charged the new early termination fee ... by the way guys and girls .... say hello to 4 year contracts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And believe me I thought I was dreaming when I was informed
Oh ish it's two Randy's in the mix!!
Four year contracts?
Canada bends over again.
Four?? Three Is Too Much!
FIDO $56 Smart Plan: Unlimited nationwide talk, global messaging, 2GB data w/ BIS and LTE, value pack
WIND $40 Wish Plan: Unlimited nationwide talk, global messaging, unlimited data w/ BIS, call control
All my posts are my own opinion only and not necessarily that of any of my employers, past or present.
That's stupid..4 year.No need for a contract that long. In 4years your phone you got that was cool at the time would be like using Nokia 3390 today.
Btw they were contemplating a five year contact, the only reason they didn't is because the CRTC apparently didn't allow it
Why would they even allow a 4 year ? 3 is a much as it is..5 ? That's gouging for sure.Originally Posted by momodabobo
