Interesting that the ic902 will be the first powersource/hybrid unit to have PTF.
The last sententes that the Moto rep said is giving me a big question mark on how iDEN is not dead and Moto/Sprint is proving it by releasing another iDEN only phone.
One hand Sprint saids iden will be out in 2010 or 2012 and another hand Motorola is saying it's not dead. Let's see who speak the truth and also see who speak nothing but lies.
iDEN is not dead.
Nextel and the marketing of Nextel based products days are numbered. A Motorola iDEN engineer once told me that iDEN will continue to grow world wide and should be around for another 15 - 20 years. Think about how many South America countries are putting up new iDEN networks.
If Motorola even dared suggusted that iDEN was a dying concept think of the potential loss of sales & support for those new iDEN networks.
A known fact is that Nextel provided at least 80% of sales for new iDEN phones. Compared to other companies world wide.
After Sprint purchased Nextel now Sprint owns 26% of NII (Nextel International) after 2012 its rumored that Sprint is going to sell the iDEN network to NII and then spin it off.

I would LOVE that. Based on the growth projections and solid growth NII is putting up now, it seems like most of the brains ended up over there anyway.
The one thing Motorola needs to do is have some big innovation on the iDEN side, something like a 12:1 interconnect vocoder that actually works, or utilizing a CDMA air interface for iDEN, etc. Moto needs a "next big thing" for iDEN. I know they can do it, I just don't know why they haven't. The iDEN division has been a cash cow, they need to make sure it will continue to be so.
As for the notions that Sprint is going to turn off iDEN, sell the hardware on eBay and ask the last iDEN engineer to please turn off the lights after he leaves, that's silly. They're going to sell that infrastructure to somebody after they've gotten as many profitable people they think they can off it. I hadn't really considered NII but it makes logical sense. The funny thing is, I wonder if NII has rights to use the NEXTEL name and logo in the US? They obviously do in Latin America...

Actually just like the Cingular buying out AT&T Wireless and then Bell South buying Cingular Wireless and renaming it back to AT&T.
Imagine NII buys Sprint's iDEN network in 2014 when they do Sprint will be selling there iDEN network called Nextel to NII. NII at that time renames there Sprint iDEN network back to Nextel LLC, and then Nextel is reborn but maybe called Nextel instead of Nextel Communications or Nextel Partners. Now Sprint who owns 26% of NII wins with the marketing of Nextel iDEN products / WiMaxx hybrid phone.
Just a thought that might end up. Consider Sprint's share holders want a return on there investment.
No details about our beloved ic902 lol..Thats great news though man...I'm glad they are releasing more hybrids phones..Its a positive thing for S/N..It can only make them stronger...
can we start releasing some iden/iden phones. I live in a non sprint market and can't use hybrids this sucks! If sprint doesn't take over this market or idens only phones aren't made there are alot of people that will be forced to leave nextel in my area of western MI.
The interesting thing here is that Motorola has requested the FCC keep pictures and user manuals of both the i425 and i290 confidential until product release time.
The big question is: Why?
The answer? Unknown, but I'm betting, based on some pics Benporat provided, that these will be the first iDEN phones with no external antenna. The i290 pictures here http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...highlight=i290 does not have an external antenna.
EDIT: that's exactly what it is. One of the RF Exposure reports lists the antenna as "internal" as opposed to "retractable" on previous reports.

i dont know if this was leaked out or not but yesterday i bought a gsm unlocked phone from a guy that worked at moto and he had a phone on the table at his house and ive never seen it before it was a nextel i570 it even said not for resale on the side of the phone it was a nice entry level phone all black and brown with red outline around the key pad he wouldnt let me take a pic of it though he said its comming out soon just to let u guys know
Are theses phones just Iden/iden not sprint/iden? I have talked to alot of people in my area and they all went to the store and asked about buying a new phone they all where told no more new phones what you see is what you get. Its making alot of people jump thinking no new phone release = death of nextel. 3 large companies in my area just converted hundereds of nextels to alltel. Then my friend from TN stated his company with thousands changed to ATT. Without phone release people feel the companies dead even if that is not true. I had an hour talk last night with a local business owner who is seeing a raise in cell minutes on nextel and a lowering in two-way as people have been jumping ship due to cost, lack of phones and support.
I also have found alot of woman jumping nextel for the "smaller sexy flip phone of other carriers there just isn't any appeal to stick with nextel anymore for the average consumer.
the only reason sales people say there ar enot gonna be any new nextels is cause they dont want the consumer to come back they want the sale closed now. so they will try to make u buy whats available now not later. sorry peeps but thats how it is when u got a quota to hit at the end of the day

Thats wrong...alot of sales reps were told awhile ago that no new nextels would be coming out, so we pass on the best info we have to our customers. Not all reps lie. I have never lied to close a deal, it may lose me a deal or two but i have VERY FEW deact's. Less than 1% of my sales have deactived b/c I let them know everything about what to expect up front. Most of us were told no new iden only phones from the higher ups in sprint, then all of a sudden last month at a meeting we find out about a new iden only phone coming out before the end of the year! Most of us just give the best info we have, which changes everyday
