The hybrids were only meant to bridge the gap between iden and cdma and to keep some of our nextel customers happy and from jumping ship. I'm guessing it slowed the bleeding down..in B-ham the hybrids got mixed results but it was an improvement for 60-70% of iden customers, imo. Now with qchat hopefully we will see some growth. I can't wait to see some of the phones

It will be mixed results with the QChat phones as well.
As far as performance the results won't be much better than the hybrids, but at least the phones will look better and have a better cell phone(as far as coverage) The direct connect coverage won't be any better for most and alot worse for others, but the phone aspect of it should be pretty nice.

Lots of people will love seeing a true "Slim" suedo Nextel phone.
I just hope they are smart enough to put in 850MHz roaming on these units or it will be no better than a hybrid to me or a large amount of people.
That's the biggest issue I and many other people have with the hybrid.

Since the only logical reason I ever heard for Moto not including it on the hybrids was due to iDEN/CDMA 800MHz co-interference, I strongly suspect we'll see 800MHz roaming on most, if not ALL, of the new "Nextel Direct Connect" Q-chat phones.

I hope so or otherwise we are gonna see alot of displeased people that WOULD have jumped on one.
It would only make sense for qchat phones to use 800 and 1900. My reasoning is that on a normal Sprint phone that is evdo capable it doesn't stop working when outside of native sprint coverage, it works just on roaming. The qchat phones will be 0% iden so no interference. Both parts(phone and dc) will work great in rev. a areas, the phone will still work great in roaming areas, and the dc will only work in rev. a areas. It will give alot more people access to a DC capable phone without sacrificing cell coverage. Will the dc work everywhere that sprint has coverage(roaming and native) No, not at all. Nextel has evolved though, imo. I THINK(I've only been around it a little over a year) at first nextel users were 90% dc and 10% phone. I think its more even now which is why nextel users are mad now about coverage, b/c they aren't just using them on jobsites anymore. Everybody has bought into the i don't need a landline anymore thing. You don't really if you have a cell that works great. Its still going to be hard for alot of hardcore nextel customers b/c rev. a coverage which is needed for qchat isn't deployed like iden is. So customers, especially at first, are going to have to re-adjust to new coverage areas. Right now most nextel users in Bham can tell you about 20 spots where it is impossible NOT to drop a call, they know where it works and where it doesn't. They problem is that the coverages don't match "this hybrid doesn't work where my nextel did". People get use to having coverage at certain spots and get pissed when all of a sudden b/c of an "upgrade" have nothing. Sprint really needs to colocate the towers, I know thats the goal, they just don't have time b/c they are losing iden customers too quick to get it perfect before the release of qchat.
The way I understand it is....it is going to function exactly like a Sprint phone...normal roaming...just with a faster PTT function that interfaces with the current iDEN and Ready-link handsets. By the time "qchat" is released, it wont matter if it's Rev. A or O. or..roaming.
I'm pretty sure that qchat will only work on evdo rev. A, 99% sure. I've been wrong before, I'm sure someone else will chime in and confirm the truth. The phone will work everywhere a normal sprint phone works, but the dc will only work where there is rev.A And qchat should be released 1Q of 2008
You'll still probably get alot of gripping due to the 1900MHz not penetrating alot of buildings, even in the area where there is Rev. A.
Only field tests will show how happy will be.
But if it does have both 850 & 1900 MHz capability, most people will be pleased with the phone unless they just live in an area where CDMA sucks such as Locust43.
Nextel...dying a death of a thousand (Sprint pin-drop) pricks.

Hmm.. did ReadyLink work on 1xRTT or.. while roaming? And how fast was the response time while doing these things? Maybe Qchat will be RL 2.0 while roaming or on 1xRTT, but then on EVDO it becomes BAM! Lightning fast.

I think I'd go for that. Hmm...we shall see.
Yeah -- RL worked only on 1xRTT, since this was years prior to Sprint's EvDO buildout, and it sucked. Initial connection times of up to ten seconds, with volley latency at about one second.
Good question. I wonder if they'll let QChat work for users in a 1xRTT-only area.
Went down to my SouthernLINC dealer Thursday (10/4/07) to pick up a i290 (Nicer i425). I was gonna get a i876 as well, but they were on backorder within 10 minutes of going on sale. Apparently there was a higher demand than Solinc had anticipated. So I'm in limbo on that one until they can get more in from Moto.
While I was there, I noticed the Mail In Rebate. My dealer didn't even bother to mention it.
Check it out.
It says as models become available. I would expect to see the i570 & i335 within the next 4-6 weeks if not sooner. WOO HOO!!!
