The website explains that incoming and outgoing messages are included in the $2.00 per day access fee. If you are paying $2.00 for a single outgoing message or a single telephone call, there is very little risk to the carrier to not charge individually for incoming mesages. Since most people respond to incoming messages soon after they are received, the carrier gets its fee almost immediately.

So if I only receive SMS one day I do not get charged either a per-SMS or daily fee.

That's great since I expect to get, and not respond, to a bunch of SMS's a month (Google Voice). If I were to respond I would probably just use the app unless I intended on calling someone that day anyways. It makes the $2/day much more attractive than the full pay-go even though the numbers are similar.

If some of the incoming messages are from instant message sources, you will be charged the daily access fee.

Switched a few days ago and I can say that all of my testing has shows 0 cost for incoming SMS. Next up is testing to see if I can share the SIM back and forth with my iPad when I need an hour or two of data access once in a blue moon.

With the proper APN and a micro-sim the iPad works with GoPhone data plans, confirmed.

The answer is it depends on what sort of package you get. Fine print at http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-pho...rtimeOffer.jsp AT&T is giving an airtime credit of up to $50 with a new line activation. A phone/airtime combo package can be bought directly from them or through a reseller like Amazon, HoFo dealers, ebay, some drugstore chains, Radio Shack, etc. As an example, a quick look at Amazon showed a budget Samsung flip with a $15 credit, and a fancier phone with a $30 credit.

If there's no airtime bundled with the phone you buy(or if you are just activating a sim card on a used GSM phone), then I think AT&T gives a small starter airtime credit with a new device activation but I don't think it's very big.

You're right on you'll have to do a round trip conversion to Google Voice since they currently only port in mobile numbers at a fee of $20. Note that landline ports to AT&T take longer than mobile ports, so do be patient.

You may also want to consider keeping AT&T prepaid service with a different number after you port the landline number out to Google voice. They've expanded coverage in the Mid-West with new 3g-only service areas, and they now have international roaming at very reasonable rates in both Canada and Mexico. I use AT&T indirectly through a reseller and am happy with the network.

Att does not give any free starter time as standard policy. Bonus airtimes for starter varies from special to special.

Feature packages last thirty days or until the underlying balance expires or is exhausted, whichever comes first.

Feature Packages: Packages are available for 30 days, as long as your account balance is not expired. Balance expiration is determined by date associated with your refill denomination. If your account balance expires before the 30 th day of the feature package, the package cannot be used (and the remaining time on the package will continue to run) unless you refill your account during the remaining days of the package period. The day you add the package is counted as a full day and counts towards the 30 days. Package expires at 12 am Central Time on day 30. After 30-day package expires or package is depleted, usage will be charged according to your underlying rate plan.

Limited Feature Packages: A package that contains a specific allotment of data (in megabytes) or messages is depleted when you use the entire allotment. Renew package before 30-day period expires and any unused service will roll over to your new 30-day package period.

If you don't use up the full 500 mb, the remainder can carry forward if you add another data package before you hit the 30 day mark. Some people will buy a jumbo data package and then use less expensive small data packages to carry the remaining balance forward. "Renew package before 30-day period expires and any unused service will roll over to your new 30-day package period."

I think you should use an offline app like NavFree, RMaps, Oruxmaps, etc. Why use data if you don't need to?

ATT changed the prepaid plan suddenly this month. 10c/min plan cannot have data package. w/o package renewal, the existing data allowance expires at the end of month. very evil...

This thread is pretty out of date...a mod should consider updating it or removing the sticky.
