Just because you provide your own sim card doesn't mean you are exempt from the activation fee. There are times when dealers or a Rogers rep can waive the activation fee but providing your own sim card and/or cellular device doesn't mean you won't get charged an activation fee of $35.

    Oh.

Then if I call them and ask for refund or credit, any chance for me?

If you activate a PAYG line, and then later on call them up (Rogers call centre) to ask them to change to a post paid account, will they still charge the $35. activation fee?

SIM Card is a piece of hardware that is empty.
People who bring their own SIM card to activate a line for their own phone are not gonna just get that line for free now.

Nothings free... pay up and have an excellen day.

I thought you do not get charged extra 35 for having my own SIM card.

    Am I missing something here?

    Thanks in advance.

YnD: Hey, I just pointed out this "trick". Just activate it under PAYG first, and then call in and ask for it to be changed to a post paid account. tomtomtom agreed with me that there is no fee. I read about this method years ago, I just not sure if it's still applicable today and thus I asked.

It's also untrue that Activation Fee could not be "free". TheSource had a promotion back in Dec. 2006 that lasted a month that Activation Fee is waived (among other good deals in the promo, there was a very long thread about it here).

SIM card costs $25. from Rogers. If what you said is true, then SIM card should not cost $25. then. In many countries, SIM card is included with prepaid package, and those prepaid package itself costs much much less than an empty SIM card from Rogers. SIM card is a universal standard and its cost should not vary by much, as you said, it's an empty hardware, right? Then why does Rogers charge $25. for the SIM card, and then another $35. for Activation Fee if the $35. Activation Fee does not provide you with a SIM card to begin with? I would take it if Rogers would mail the customer a SIM card for free, after charging the customer the $35. Activation Fee. At least that makes sense.

You don't have to look far. Fido does not charge Activation Fee. Their SIM card is $30. (used to be $25.) and that along is the "activation kit" equivalent. Fido is a Rogers company now. So it is possible to charge much less.

Give me a break. We as customers have choices and don't tell us to "pay up". No wonder it's called Robbers for a reason.

I don't quite agree w/ you with the above comment. Other carriers are just as bad.

    1. Their cancellation fee. from a minimum of 100 dollar to maximum of 800
ESN swap fee - 10 over the internet, 25 thru the rep
Plan Change fee - don't remember the price (both upgrade or downgrade will be charged)

    Anymore?

Why not just call them, tell them that you were told that the fee was waived, and sound angry? This seems to get me discounts off my internet bills and phone bills all the time.

I should also mention, I recently set up an account with a rogers CR and she told me my activation fee will be waived. If its not, I will do the above until I get what I want.

Activation Fee are never waived and you'll never see your first bill saying activation waived. What rogers does is actually put in a good will cr on the invoice for the amount compromised. This will only work under circumstances. you add a line onto your BAN and call directly into CRelations or there's a promo that 'waives' the activation fee. A simple call to rogers CSR won't help at all. Activating a line will cost you $35 more for the first bill. And guess what, Rogers CSR never mentions anything about promos or waives unless it's advertise all over there ads and collaterals, so calling them to activate a line seems unnecessary.

By buying a sim card from BST it doesn't save you from the $35. If you were activating a new line, then you should've gone to a dealer and see what promos they had, some have $0 phones, and all phones come with an inactive sim card, so you could've got yourself a backup phone and a sim card and still will have to pay the $35 act fee.

All in all, the $35 is almost like a service charge by rogers. Reserving your number, doing a credit check on you, setting up your plans, etc.

    Plus a $50 migration fee.

Very wrong. Any new activation done through Telesales (the call center) is automatically waived by a discount code, not a goodwill credit.

when places like "The Source" or "Rogers Wireless Dealers" offer to waive your $35 activation fee, it is usually not instant. The Source and Dealers will have to credit you that amount to your account (out of their own pocket).
