I am relatively new to all of this but I greatly appreiciated his help and others that he inspired to share knowledge. My thoughts go to his family and I hope that his memory lives on in the legacy that he has helped to create in howard forum and beyond.

Truly tragic. I remember his great contributions from back in the alt.cellular.clearnet days. He will be missed.

    some-gei,

Yes, that was where I first met him in the USENET newsgroup in the late '90s. And, I was among the few who has figured out the real ID of John Helmsley. Since then, we become good friends - especially this two years as I have spent more time in Toronto than in Vancouver. He was one of the guys I hanging with.

By the way....was it the incident @ the Leafs vs Pens game?
    Beckham23,

No, it was a heart attack during his own game (he played hockey twice a week).

Not to seem insensitive but can someone sticky this thread?

Helmsley was a great asset to not only the community but right here in the Telus forum where he faced all white vans head-on.

Once again, this is very sad news but within the community, Helmsley was a respected individual too all that knew him personally and communally.

    may he R.I.P

Very good guy, who'll deeply be missed. It's very unreal to hear this sad news.
    Nokia 6188,

Unreal, isn't it? I thought that I have heard it wrong when his wife cried and told me about the loss of Barry. I wish I can be there in Canada right now... I am just too far away and too long to be back.

My condolences to his family and friends as well...It's sad to hear that he had a heart attack while playing hockey... as I too also play roughly 3 days a week. I will surely miss his info and presence along with his no fear of "THE WHITE VAN".

I just took a few minutes to read his older posts and thought, wow this guy knew alot for a very long time.

Too bad it takes a tragedy to force us to think about how great people are.

    Here's to Helmsley
