There's no commission for devices, the commission is on the unlimited data on the device.
As for monthly service for the SIM, I'm not sure. I have training that I have yet to take on this device due to lack of time. I'll take it tomorrow or Sunday and report back.
Thanks VZW_CSR, will look forward to learning more about the SIM fees (if any). Also thanks for the photos - it looks as if the device is not much bigger than a Treo 700...just thinner.
I got to take an early look at the 8830 yesterday and absolutely love it! Very well constructed and slim. It is slighly heavier than my 9900 but this thing can def take a beating. I found the navigation via roller ball very second nature and the menu set up was the most impressive UI i have seen to date. Very cool phone
GPS? That's the dealmaker/dealbreaker for me. . . .
Likewise.
I'm currently a Verizon customer, but I'm fed up with their restrictions and limitations. The locked GSM is one strike, the potential Bluetooth restrictions (no OBEX) is two strikes, and if GPS is restricted then I'm finished with them.
My contract is up, so there is nothing preventing me from switching.
I'm in same place. GPS is a show stopper. I'm just waiting for my contract to end. Is anyone from Verizon listening? How about Palm- you are getting your lunch eaten by Blackberry and you don't even have a product announcement that competes, never mind a product. Is anyone home?

Whats the point, if VZW did offer GPS on the 8830 they would probably charge a $10 or $15 monthly fee for the serivice - I would rather put the money toward a Nuvi.
On another note, I had the chance to play with the 8800 and the Pearl today, and I liked both. I think the Pearl screen is the same as the 8800, but turned on its side. For me I think it will be easier to read emails with a unit that has a wider rather than taller screen.

I think they're hoping gps is not restricted so one could use apps like google maps and use the gps functionality in getting directions.
VZW_CSR -- when you do get around to posting your impressions, I realized the one thing I didn't put in my post of things I was interested in from yesterday is sound quality on phone calls and of the speaker phone.

The day VZW offers something free of charge will be the day Hell places a bulk order for space heaters. VZW has been my carrier for many years now, and I can assure you its not for the phone selection, services offerings, or the customer service...plain and simple, its the network. If you want a great example of the nickle and diming, try and swap your equiptment online...at one time the service was free....now its $15 via a CSR. VZW took away the one feature that was capable of letting CDMA phones act (sort of ) like a SIM swap on a GSM phone. Thanks to their generous nature, I now get to excercise with a Treo...and look like a tool that can't escape email, when all I really want to do is call 911 when I get run over by a car.

not to get off topic: but verizon really doesn't let you do an ESN change online now? and you have to pay to do it on the phone? that seems ridiculous.
I finally got my Cyclone activated on one of my numbers today, and it is sweet. From what I can tell so far (using bb maps and google maps), the GPS isn't currently accessible from any software. While that sucks, it's not a huge deal, I have a BT GPS that I used with my Treo and Q that I can use with it if I really need to.
The track ball took some getting used to, but it is really pretty nice.
The browser really scoots along nicely over EV-DO. As far as speed tests go, dslreports.com/mspeed doesn't seem to support BlackBerry. Does anyone have a suggestion of where I can test the throughput speed?
The screen is beautiful, I'll have to encode some videos to test the video player out. I am definitely provisioned for MMS messaging, but I can't seem to get any when I send them. I'll have to look further into this.
VZW_CSR - how is the phone quality? speaker phone? does it come with a few theme options? have you tried saving new themes or ringtones off the browser? is spell check built into the os? and can you set up separate mailboxes for separate email accounts / text messages?

It depends on what phones you're swapping. If the phones support the same type of plans (data, etc.) you can swap the ESNs online. If you were swapping from a Treo or a Q to a Blackberry, it's less likely since the BB has a different data plan than the other phones.
According to a rep that I spoke with (so therefore, we can't be sure) if you attempt to do the switch online before you call, they won't charge you. I'll be putting that to the test soon. There's no doubt that VZW's online ESN switcher has a lot more "gotchas" than simply swapping a SIM card.
