Right now I have a samsung SYNC and as far as cingular knows, this is the IMEI that i'm registered under and the phone that i use. If i sign up for the media max 200 plan (unlimited data, 200 texts) plan for $19.99 for my SYNC and then put the sim into a blackberry pearl that i purchased off of ebay, is there anyway cingular would catch onto that?
Im going to be using it for casual email and surfing the internet casually as well so i doubt i will be incurring that many kb of data.
I'm hoping i can just use OLAM and sign up for the media max 200 and then pop the sim into the pearl and pay 19.99 for unlimited data
no no i dont mean that..i mean can i use the free WAP i have somehow to get dial-up internet for free using my bluetooth?
What do you mean by "free wap"? You aren't making any sense.
The only way to use the phone as a modem is to tether it to your computer. You can create a Bluetooth Modem device and tell that modem to "dial" either *99# or *99***1#
This will connect your computer to the network and you can use it like a regular dial-up connection. You need a data plan to do this; it isn't free. Well okay, that's not really true, but I would not recommend doing this w/o a data plan since you can easily run up $1000 bills that way.

As of now, still, they don't care, or rather they wouldn't find out I don't believe. You mine as well try it and let US know if they have inforced their new soon to be plan, which is something related to, only your Sync IMEI would be able to connect. It's a new way of allowing only the phone u prushcased form them to work with your SIM card, however like I said I don't think its going yet, since I can plug my SIM from my Sync into my old Nokia and tether via that too. :]
no no like when u have ur own proxy server and then u have ur own wap..its free..u dont use cingular's proxy, so it only costs me minutes
how can i use that same wap for my dial-up connection
You don't. You can point your phone at any proxy you want, or none at all, but data transferred gets tallied and billed before it even hits the proxy (some phones like the Nokia N75, Cingular branded, even have a setting called "Proxyless").
As far as getting billed minutes, you don't. There used to be something called CSD that would let you dial into a traditional ISP like you would with a landline modem, but it is no longer offered and is being discontinued even for old accounts that may still have it because it's painfully slow (9.6 kbps) and ridiculously inefficient in spectrum use.
You are confusing AT&T with Verizon. Verizon once made the mistake of billing their data usage at their proxy rather than on the switches between the towers and the proxy, allowing some knowledgeable users to do exactly what you mentioned. I think that mistake of theirs was corrected long ago.
If you want data on your phone, you'll need to buy a data plan. The lowest Media Max package ($20 per month) is pretty cheap, especially considering that it includes 200 texts.
Upgraded my RAZR to a Blackjack, and was concerned about having to pay a ridiculous $40/mo just to have the phone. Did a live chat with an AT&T rep, and he told me point blank that I could use MediaNet. Rep at a corporate store said the exact same thing. So either the reps don't care, or they are easing up on the restrictions.
So, I am signed up for MediaMax 200 so I could get the rebate. Question is, if I use IE instead of MediaNet, is there any chance of me being charged kb? I am using wap.cingular. Also, any chance of them figuring it out by looking at my usage? I have ZERO plans to tether anything. Really all I want is messaging, check email, sports, and the occasional mobile-friendly website. It's the very last thing I'm worried about.
I figure they can't make me change my plan to PDA, as that would be fraud in the inducement, thereby making my contract voidable.
ok i got a problem. so today i go to teather on a long car ride. im watching tv clips and other videos on my sync (so the internet and 3g is working). i go to hook it up to my laptop and it connects but it wont load the pages on my browser. does anybody know how this could happen. ive tried different phones differnet devicies(different plans) is it just a network outage of some sort yet that dosent really explain why i could get internet on my phone. well if anybody has a helpfull hint. it is dispritley needed.
Thanks

v3 razr on dads plan
Sync on my plan
V557 on my plan
None work
I don't post here often so please bear with me. I (at my old age) start back to college this week. As I am able to do some of my classwork online, I purchased a v3xx last friday with the intention of tethering to my laptop. I added the laptop connect plan for an additional 59.99. I know that's the way AT&T wants it but am I paying too much? I think I will only use this to post emails about twice a month with possibly a word attachment or powerpoint. I guess better safe than sorry but I wanted your opinions.

What you can do, should do, and are required to do in some areas of the AT&T mobility world can be fuzzy at best. That said, you need to be informed and act accordingly. First read AT&T Mobility's DATA TOS, Keep in mind if there is an conflict, the TOS rules. AT&T's data TOS states that medianet data plans are not for 'PDA' devices. PDA devices are defined as a handheld wireless device with an embeded QWETY keyboard. So if you go by the rules, you need a PDA Data plan. Now, Cingular's main billing system Telegence, will allow the addition of medianet to a wireless device with an embeded keyboard (PDA), without an error. - so as you were told the system will 'allow it'. Now, edits are in the works to fix Telegence, and servcie audits are done to find plan-phone 'errors'. Also AT&T Mobility CS reps are told not to offer or add medianet on a PDA device and if they do and that call is QA'd they can recive a '0' score - something as a rep you don't want to happen. Per the company's TOS's, they can correct a 'incompatible' feature or remove the feature if an audit shows the customer was setup incorrectly.
