Do you already have this plan? Because I don't think it's offered anymore. I find Nokias incredibly simple to tether. Just plug it to the computer via usb, start Nokia Suite if it doesn't start automatically, and hit connect to internet. But I mainly use an app called Joiku spot to create a hot spot from the phone.
will Joiku-light or premium , convert My Samsung Rugby to a wifi hotspot for my laptop for access to $15 unlimited data this feature is still showing as available on my AT&T manage features .

I don't think you will get very far with trying to use the Rugby as a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Rugby doesn't even include a Wi-Fi radio, which is necessary to use the phone as a hotspot.
OK I got it thanks!!! what would be the easiest way to hook up laptop to a whatever phone? as hotspot for Media unlimited don't need a smart phone , I would never use , I don't even text, I use basics of phone and internet ????? ( quick and cheap )
AT&T Free Msg: Did you know tethering your Smartphone to a computer requires a tethering plan? Pls call 866-679-7134 for details or visit att.com/dataplans.
I tether to a non-smartphone (Samsung Strive). No changes to OLAM as of yet. Last month's tethering + phone data usage ~1.5 gigs.
Has anyone else gotten a similar message before? How did you respond? Thanks!
This pertains to straight talk unlimited everything I know that they do not allow tethering , but is there a way to connect laptop to straight talk plan ??? ATT doesn't allow it either but some still do it

I never got that text, my mother got a letter in the mail stating something similar. Until recently I wasn't using the tethering heavily. But in the last month or so I have downloaded about 5-6GB of data. First because our U-Verse was a bit unstable until we got a new router/gateway and I was at Occupy LA where they have a Cradle Point 3G Router but that's used for Live Streaming (and the media tent in general) but I opted to use my phone instead.
This likely set off alarm bells at AT&T because I had been using maybe 1GB of data a month if that. Mostly browsing the net while in A+ class, where I downloaded a couple of smaller than 1GB Linux distros and did some light watching of streaming video (Hulu and You Tube).
This sucks because I had planned on using this phone (Pantech Link) as a Bluetooth modem for an Archos 43 Internet Tablet/Media Player while on the bus. No heavy downloads, but streaming music (Sirius Radio App) mostly.
I may go ahead and risk this because I don't use enough data normally to warrant them detecting its connected to an internet device and not the phone itself. Just no heavy downloads (torrents, video, etc).
I'm thinking about using a Droid Pro on AT&T (band unlocked to work with the AT&T bands). I'm guessing I could get away with the non-smartphone data plan, since AT&T doesn't sell the Pro, so they shouldn't have the IMEI in their database.
What about tethering, though? I know they seem to be doing deep packet inspection to see if you're tethering to a laptop, but what about tethering to a tablet? Would they still be able to tell just the same, or would it just look like a phone was using the internet?

Deep packet inspection huh? Well since my phone doesn't support Flash with its own browser I wonder if that would show up?
You might wanna be careful with what you do on your connected device if you tether. I recently got that text message but I haven't tethered since that letter because I haven't needed too.
This is why net neutrality is important and should be added to Occupy OWS agenda.
No, from what I've read, it's not. For AT&T, must subscribe to the $25 data plan that gives you 2GB per month, plus the extra $20 tethering charge that gives you an extra 2GB. For Verizon, you subscribe to the data plan that costs $30 per month for unlimited 3G data, and $20 extra to use the hotspot feature with a 2GB cap.
You'll want to confirm these prices with the carrier to make sure those prices are accurate.
