You can, and it will work however if cingular finds out some how they will change the plan to a data connect.
I know that many people get away with it. So the question is, is there a way for cingular to find out? (besides unusually large amounts of data transfer?)

it would be very easy for cingular to find out...they have all the information and can pull it all out of their systems. question is whether they're setup to deal with all the data processing and whether they care to at this point?
key is to stay under the radar but the "under" will be a moving target so some people will get burned. i've read about people using their 3g data as their ISP and that's just plain stupid! 3g data is meant to complement your dsl/cable not to replace it!
i used to work on the backend/software engineering side of the telecom business (ie cingular, verizon would be our customers) and you'd be surprised what kind of highly detailed information they have at hand when necessary (i was in enterprise/corp domain). avg usage, peak usage, statistical analysis over time etc etc...
they can look at certain "signatures" such as websites that werent meant for the small screen such as youtube, peaky and large downloads, using a data plan as a constant-on connection etc...
i think 3g is relatively new in general and is outside their domain (dealing with packet data over voice traffic) in a way but once many people start using 3g and cingular gets used to dealing with data centric traffic AND most importantly they'll start getting performance bottlenecks, they will start caring where and how their precious data is being used. (with edge it was the edge connection that was the bottleneck, but with 3g that bottleneck will be cingular's backbone connections) once damand for fast 3g surpasses supply/bandwith available on their network i suspect they'll really start clamping down on overzealous users and network abusers.
i kinda like the way some european countries do things, instead of "unlimited" data (we all know thats not true; more like magical cap of 1gb-4gb) they sell 4gb of high speed data guaranteed and once you get over that it steps down to edge only data. frankly i never used 4gb of data on a wireless connection so this clean and concise definition of what i should expect with a plan would be fine with me
they already have bt for mobile. and i burn through plenty of data. and i do tether and they cant tell if im tethering. they could if i didnt have the pda connect. if they shut me off thats fine will just save me money. i dont tether often. and i can 0only wonder how much data i can burn through if i had a hsdpa phone. right now im using on average 9gig a month.
affect change and churn baby churn
want to contribute to a ringtone collection? want to archive and be able to get others archived rings? im planning on putting together a nice lil collection of users rings just email howard.f.rings@gmail.com your rings and ill put them together in a lil zip for all free of course.
I am using an unlocked T-mo Dash with Cingular service and I am thinking of signing up for a data plan. On Cingular.com I've seen two options for $19.99/mo:
-Smartphone connect unlimited
-MediaMax 200 bundle (unlimited data w/200 msgs) - this one is available only through MyAccount->ManageFeatures.
What are the differences between two plans (other than the 200 txt msgs), and will I qualify for either of those, or I'll have to jump through hoops?
Would Cingular consider Dash to be a PDA or a Smartphone?
Anything else I should watch out for when signing up for a data plan?

There is no difference. The are identical except Media Max includes the 200 messages. The internet data is identical.

You log on to your account online and add Media max 200 that way to avoid hassle (Log in and choose 'manage features') If you call CS they may or may not hassle you depending on what kind of phone they THINK you have.

Officially a PDA. Cingular considers any device with a QWERTY keyboard to be a PDA. It's a dumb rule, but that's what they say.
However you could probably convince a Cingular CS rep or employee that it's a smartphone. But this should only matter when trying to get media max or smartphone connect. Once you have it, it won't matter

These plans only cover unlimited data for the 'wap.cingular" access point. There is another one called "isp.cingular" which you don't need. Don't use isp.cingular. if you try and succeed, it won't be unlimited data (pay per KB.)
I would just get a line without data. Then log in to your account online and add Media Max 200 that way.
I never heard this thing about it not being compatible with Cingular Text messaging. that doesn't sound right because all GSM phones support text messaging regardless. But maybe there's something I don't know. Dash has a n instant messenger app and I don't know how that works. But text messaging is different and should be fine.
im currently using my nokia 6131 with the unlimited startphone access ($19.99) plan. im not able to check my monthly data usage right now but ill check that later as well. i use opera mini a few times a day to check a few websites when im not near a computer and i use the phones built in browser to check email a few times daily too. most of the time, i will use opera to send or reply to messages on myspace or web forums, nothing too extensive and usually for only 5-10 mins at a time. im going to get a laptop to tether to (i know its not the right plan), via bluetooth. when i tether, it would most likely be to connect for brief periods of time to do the same things as above and possibly have conversations over AIM for awhile. my questions are as follows....
1.) roughly how much data would i accumulate a month by using my phone as described above, minus the tethering part (just opera and yahoo on a daily, 5 times or so a day for about 5-10 mins at a time?
2.) how much more or less would be connecting via tethering to a laptop just to use AIM for lets say 1 hour a day, no web browsing?
3.) whats the best way to tether, downloading and using the cingular connection program offered on their website or just using nokia pc suite and setting it up as a modem.
4.) since im using the smartphone connect plan, what would i have to use if i needed to set it up, the wap.cingular.com or the isp.cingular one?
thanks for the help...i was searching most of the night and still will continue to. ive read alot about the tethering process and with all of the cingular data setups, its just so confusing.
and on another note, i checked my GPRS log and for the last year since this phone was new (ive never reset the data counter) all of my total useages were the following....
recieved data: 53,582,064 B
sent data 10,198,732 B
those are bytes right??? 1024 byte in 1 kB and 1024 kB in one mB right? someone put them into MB for me just so im sure??? basically if im doing the math right, thats roughly 63 MB for the year?? hahaha thanks

I currently have the data connect plan on my 8125 .v With the new media net plans that are out now, what would be the difference in switching to a lower priced plan both price wise and performance wise ??
