If your email account can be accessed from the web why don't you just check your email from there. That way it will be left on the server and you can still use wi-fi to read it and doesn't that mean no data?
Having fun playing with my new phone the Samsung SCH-i760
Just to clarify - Active Sync no longer works over a wi-fi NETWORK; however you could install Verizon's Wireless Sync program and sync using a wi-fi INTERNET connection. I think is is possible to use wireless sync over wifi internet EVEN if you have a data block on the Verizon 1X/EVDO network.
I didn't know that at all -- I'm using Wireless Sync with my Q and I assumed the Wireless Sync app that's actually running on the Q would only connect through EVDO. I don't think there's anything in the options about changing the internet source.
On my i730, I'm quite sure the wireless sync app will connect over a wi-fi or even the internet connection through Active Sync. The key is that it needs to connect to Verizon's server which mirrors your home computer / outlook using a monitor program that is installed on your home computer.
Then you install the monitor program on your home computer, and leave Outlook and the monitor program running.
Then you connect your device to the internet (1x or EVDO or wi-fi hotspot or activesync internet sharing) and sync.
Note that the active sync connection should be either a guest account or an account with all the items that are synced via wireless sync turned off i.e. contacts, calendar, email. etc.
The reasons for doing this rather than just setting up the mail program on the device to check the pop server directly, is that you can control the mail better because it is all stored on your computer in your home/office, including using folders, filters for junk mail etc.
The second benefit is that you can sync contacts and your calendar remotely. This is especially useful if you need to reset your device in the field.
A third benefit, is you can log on to Verizon's server via ANY computer and check your outlook information including email, contacts, and calendar.
Actually now a poster over there who had tested the phone has posted that it does include 802.11b and 802.11g, and can support 4 GB cards.
I have a question that I'm sure many of you here could answer for me.
This will be my first PDA phone. I plan to set things up so that I can receive e-mail on this phone, while still leaving my messages on the e-mail server. In other words, my normal e-mail procedures for receiving and dealing with mail via my home computers should be unaffected, in that all the e-mail will still get there. (I'm not planning on syncing.) But reading the manual causes me to think that to receive copies of the e-mail on the PDA, I will have to force a connection to check for mail. Am I missing something? Is there really no way to have the PDA phone, which will, of course, have a data plan, just check for new mail every 5 minutes, without any action from me, and alert me when there is new mail?
I would hope there is a way to do this, but if so, it was not clear in the manual. The info that worried me is on page 74 of the manual.
Thanks in advance for any assistance with this.
Andy W.
Yes there is a way to tell it to look for new e-mail every x number of minutes.
VZW, It's 2009! Time to embrace technology, not suppress it.
oops....too late I've ported over to AT$T
It's starting to look like the "rumored" Labor Day weekend launch is a no go... Any new info?
To expand on this a little bit, from the PDAPhoneHome forums it looks like we are getting the same "I talked to national account rep so-and-so and he said it would be [INSERT RUMOR TIMEFRAME HERE]" discussions. There is also people chiming in saying that their source is out of the office "but last they heard it was late september.." Well that's the last we heard too until the weekend, so who knows.
So cut to the chase we are just spinning the rumor mill again. Maybe it will happen, maybe not.. My question would be why they would delay the phone until end of September if it's approved and ready now? I'm curious to see if it will show up in testman before the end of the week.

-Just thought I'd post what I heard. Like all of you I hope he's wrong and we see it in two weeks! ...Anything new Equus?
Sorry I have not talked to that person since that call I got. I have not heard any different yet, but working with VZW these many years there seems to be a problem "upstairs" like they are so scared to tell the minions what time it is on the planet earth and or have them open the shades in their cubicles VZW has stated in a few meetings that they want to get A PDA out for the labor day week to stir up some business

I talked to Ethan, he's out of the office again, but last he heard was nothing to do with Labor Day weekend, but he was only in the office for a couple of days before being out again. Last he heard was a 30 day time from the Q9 release.
I hope you are correct Equus, as I really need a new phone, but I needed to report was Ethan said...
Ok, this is approximate, but it seems that VZW usually publishes a press release 2-4 weeks before a new handset is available online/in stores. Haven't seen anything for the i760 (anxiously waiting).
I'm thinking it may very well be mid-late Sept.....
Did we get this publication before the Q9m? What about the 8830 or 700wx? I'm really asking here and not being sarcastic because I don't recall any publications for the above 3 pdas before they were released and I follow the forums pretty heavily. I'm talking about official vzw publications, not stuff found via engadget or vzw employee scans of internal documents that we've all found to be quite useless when it comes to release dates.

That is not accurate. They don't let stuff out early. Just to emphasize their press release about the q9m was on 8/22/7, the same day the phone was released online.
You are correct about the q9m.
- The vx8700 was announced on 3/28/07 to be on sale 4/6/2007 online and 5/1/2007 in stores. Razr Maxx was very close to this also.
- The Razr 2 (V9m) was published on 8/10/2007 and still not available via either medium.
- The BlackBerry 8830 was announced on 4/25/2007 to be available 5/14/2007.
Just from what I remember and can find, the q9m is the only recent exception. It appears that usually the phone is announced in advance.
YOU'RE is correct, not "your". contraction for "you are". end of discussion. is this off topic?
Grammar should always be on topic. If the mods don't like it, we can kick their butts all the way over there, and then we can see what they're going to do about it
Now really getting on topic: That test this thing passed a couple days ago...does that mean it's 100% approved for the network and can be released whenever they want?
My question would be why they would delay the phone until end of September if it's approved and ready now?
If the test units where JUST approved with software A ver 2, software B ver5 firmware ver004 etc.. It will take some time for Samsung or Verizon (whoever does it) to "configure" package and ship the first production level phones. They will also probably want each store to have x amount in stock so that they can all start selling them on the same date.
If they get the production phones configured, Owner’s manuals and supplements written and printed, software CDs manufactured (all at the approved levels),shipping and release done by the end of Sep. I will be amazed.
My point is that there in normally a lot of work between final approval of a product and getting that product on the shelf.
