Is anybody else skeptical about the quality/functionality of this pda? Let's assume for one second that VZW is truthfully having all kinds of technical problems as they say they are. Well, that means they have been ironing out these problems since November of last year (2006) when the phone was first rumored. In this world full of such advance technology, if it takes almost if not more than a year to get an insignificant and basic device (compared to advanced devices such as laptops) released to the public, then there must be some serious issues. Now we all know that VZW has a terrible track record of releasing pdas rittled with problems so if they are trying to get this thing released with the same 'quality' as the previous pda's, then I think we are headed for disaster.
Now there is a flip side to all this. VZW might finally start trying to live up to their default phrase that they tell the reps to say which is "Well, Verizon likes to make sure their phones are working perfectly before they release it". So they might truly be trying to make the i760 the best as they can. Obviously, no electronic device can be perfect upon the first release because there's no testing like the testing a company can get by selling their product to thousands of consumers who will then complain or as the manufacturer puts it "inform" them of the problem(s).
So if I were some of you, I wouldn’t be so quick to jump on this phone. Obviously there are going to be a few, even here, that will get it the day it releases on the net, so I’m curious to see what their reviews are going to be. I am still very skeptical that this is going to be the 'godsend' phone that many think it’s going to be (including myself at one time). The layout of the pda is absolutely perfect IMO and if this thing lives up to the hype and currently release specs, I will eventually get it based on quality of functionality. If it’s another 700w or original Q, then I will continue to stick with my indestructible V710.
I don't think all these phones have so many problems, how many companies have rolled out the HTC 6800 and 5800? They're putting in their stupid software into these phones and it's not working because these high-end phones don't want to be cheap. If these phones do have problems, though, Verizon really has NO excuse because of the fact that other carriers are releasing the same phone with what seems to be little problems.
And of course you shouldn't ever get a phone first off. LOL, I always wait for people's reactions here.

Not trying to be a pain in the butt, just wanted to make sure I had it straight.
Thanks.
No, that they SHOULD have released and have been said to be released for a long long time. Reps have been told so many different release dates, so they did plan on it. As far as I'm concerned, if I'm paying the extra buck for some crippled phone with great service and want to get a better one, there should be a wide range of selection for me and there isn't. Verizon caters to the simpleton cell phone user, I am not a simpleton. They have planned on releasing phones that would cater more towards my needs for what, about a year now? When you put a phone on display at one of these conventions, you are gearing up towards a RELEASE of a new product. And I'm sure you know, products in this business are meant to gear new and old customers towards going for/staying with the specific carrier. Verizon is not doing that, they're releasing **stupid** phones so that teeny boppers and 65 year old blind people will come to them.
Instead of re-releasing every successful phone on their line, they need to shape up and put a bit more variety into their phone selection. EVERYONE I see walking around campus has some variant of the Chocolate or the enV, it's ridiculous.

You have 30 days to try it. So jump and don't throw away your old phone......
So, people are mad at Verizon, even leaving for other carriers, because Verizon has not released a phone that they have not said they would.
It's actually better than that. There are some here who left Verizon because they "couldn't wait any longer," jumped ship to AT&T to purchase the "technologically superior" Tilt (HTC Kaiser) in August, only to find out that phone's been delayed until "late September" (they hope). It's all good.
Three things lead me to believe that the scenarios quoted below simply don't hold water:
1. Samsung hardware has a generally excellent track record
I have a very difficult time believing that Samsung might have released any unit to VZW (or anyone else) that was buggy enough to warrant the apparent delays we're seeing.
2. The purported troubles with WM 6 seem to be limited to the i760
There are several other WM 6 devices on the market, and I haven't heard or read of any pervasive, show stopping problems related to the OS. Is it possible that the i760 is the exception, and is indeed hosed? Sure, it's a possibility, but see item #1.
3. VZW tinkers with all their phones
VZW has a well-established history of both crippling phone features (how they've screwed with Bluetooth on their phones is well documented, for example), and of grafting their annoying proprietary interfaces and other crap (i.e. Get It Now) onto perfectly functional phones.
So, I find it much more likely and believable that the i760's problem is actually a problem with getting the crippling hacks, VZW interface and/or GIN to work to VZW's satisfaction (meaning that the mods either hose the phone, or are too easy to undo.)

How soon they forget. The Samsung SCH-i630 was a clamshell WM Smartphone designed to replace Verizon's successful i600. It got about as far through the testing process as the i760 is today (past the FCC, a couple of delayed release dates...). Suddenly it just plain disappeared and it's not been heard from since. About 9 months later, the PN-820 showed up at Verizon.

Since your item #1 is proven inaccurate, your case for this point is also weakened.

Yet they manage to get several non-PDA models out the door with many of these features in them. Hmmm...

And it's just as easy to imagine the i760 is flawed in some fashion (as the i630 apparently was). While Verizon does everything in its power to suck all your money away from you, they also know they make no money if there are no phones in the customers' hands to generate the income. It's possible Verizon is trying to sabotage their own business model from within, but somehow I doubt it.
I'm really (really!) not interested in arguing, but you seem to have missed some key concepts in my post:
First: Note that I said that Samsung has a generally good track record regarding their hardware. Therefore, while it may be true that Samsung screwed the pooch with another device, exceptions to my statement do not negate it. I'm making a comment based on their overall track record, not pointing out their relatively few lapses, if it was a Samsung lapse (I'm not familiar with the story; was the phone defective, or did VZW elect to not market it for other reasons?). [By the way: I see that my wording in the first post can be interpreted the way you did... I need to be more precise with my statements!]
Second: Since my first statement isn't really negated, it doesn't really weaken the second!
Third: Yes, it's true that VZW has indeed gotten some relatively un-messed-with "non-PDA" devices to market... but does that in any way contradict my statement that VZW has a history of implementing the changes I cited??!!?? I'll be thrilled to pieces if it turns out that VZW has abandoned their nefarious ways.... but I'll believe it when I see it.
Finally: You're absolutely correct that there are other possibilities; I never claimed nor implied that my list was in any way comprehensive.
By the way: I also agree that it's unlikely that VZW is sabotaging their business plan!
This was posted on pdaphonehome.com tonight by MiniBullyMom:
Okay....I've been lurking in this forum all summer. I have sat on my hands and resisted posting - until now. I have an acquaintance who works for Samsung and designs/troubleshoots the phones. I saw the phone months ago, have played with one and have seen what it can do. I fell in love the phone immediately. A week later my acquaintance says that she/he has an i760 sitting at home waiting for Verizon to launch it. Once its launched she/he can hand it over to me. Verizon is the one holding up the release. Sammy has been done with the phone for months and in fact has moved on to a major redesigning of another one of their popular phones (which shall remain nameless).
The i760 is absolutely awesome and if it does half of what Sammy's vision is for it you will be very happy. Yes, it will be the first PDA phone I've ever had. But my friend has assured me that it will do everything I need it to do and eliminate carrying around my PDA, Cellphone and Laptop 90% of the time. I will occasionally have to carry my laptop to places when I go on trips and such. So as such I to have been anxiously awaiting the release along with everyone else here.
Well....today Verizon called me to "analyze" my calling plan to see if I'm "maximizing my plan possiblities" so that I'm getting the best deal for "my needs". So...I said well..I'm not interested in changing anything unless they have released the i760. Well...that sent her a scurrying through their database so she could get a sale. She was able to find info on it, but informed me that it was still pending release but she was able to dig up pricing info on it for me so I could "plan my purchase" better.
Retail Price: $519.00
With 2yr agreement: $399.00
With mail-in rebate: $349.00
NE2 drops it to: $249.00
Add the unlimited data plan bonus/rebate and the phone is mine for: $149.00
Now that is by adding it to my primary line. If your adding it to a secondary line the NE2 is only $49.
She is ready to call me the day before it's released to process my upgrade and anticipates being able to do that before the end of the month. After she looked at the specs on it (which she hadn't prior to calling me) she can't wait to get one for herself and can see why we are all so anxiously waiting.
I feel like the lady in that old Mervyn's commercial standing outside the store doors saying "open...open...open".
Having fun playing with my new phone the Samsung SCH-i760
I'd certainly love to believe that price is true. And maybe with the iPhone dropping in price it'll force a bit of downward pressure on the market (even though I'm getting tired of hearing about the thing.)
