Here are my experiences with my SK3, which I've owned since Christmas:
>The damn system sounds makes me feel like I'm in an arcade. I've turned them off because they're too annoying.
>The swivel is cool, but very loud. It's a disadvantage when you're in a quiet room and/or shouldn't be using the phone at the time, but want to.
>It is bulky.
>The 1.3MP camera has worse quality than my VGA camera on my old A670.
>The web browser is great. It's probably the app I use the most on it.
>It is bulky.
>The OS is pretty easy to use, but the Jump screen takes longer to find the app you want than other mobile operating systems. It's confusing at first, but I got the hang of it after about a day or two.
>That girl with the purple hair on the jump screen is creepy.
>IM client is good, but I hardly use AIM anymore. It'd be nice if SMS was threaded like the IM client.
>SMS is quick and simple, but see above: I wish it was threaded. I also wish that when my SMS storage is full that it would automatically delete messages instead of bouncing them.
>The keyboard is stellar for typing.
>It has the best data plan in the business. Web, e-mail, IM, AND TEXT all for $20???
>Dialing isn't so bad because you can select from contacts without swiveling the screen up. However, if you let someone borrow your phone to call their parents, you'll have to dial the number for them and show them where to put their ear.
>Music player is nice, but I can never add more songs to the memory card without reformatting it and losing all my data. It could be the MS_DOS formatting with my shiny iMac, however. I also wish it supported more music file formats.
>If you're pooped, fall asleep with the lights on, and wake up, you'll be without a phone for the day. You need to charge it every night. It's not bad because it lasts me the whole day, but I'm in trouble if I fall asleep and forget to plug it in.
>E-mail app is okay, but if E-mail is one of the main reasons you need a smartphone, than you should probably pick a smartphone other than the Sidekick.
>The screen isn't bad, but it also isn't good, either. The auto-backlight's intentions are good and all, however.
>It is bulky.
What Danger/Sharp/T-Mobile needs to do is this: shrink it, put a better screen in it, put a better camera in it, make SMS threaded, redesign the Jump screen (without the creepy hipsters), make the text slightly larger (my dad can't read a thing on it), make the swivel rattle quieter, add support for more music formats, and make the battery last longer, and they will have a winner.
I can't tell you how many envious looks I get when I use my SK. It is a little annoying. I wanted a Sidekick because the data plan rocks, and the keyboard is pretty sweet. I also chose it partially because of the name and what comes with it, but that's sometimes a cursing in disguise. My Verizon contract was up in 8.2007, and that A670 broke in November. I follow the Apple rumors scene, and I first heard of Apple developing a phone several years ago, but I didn't think I'd see the iPhone now. Verizon had terrible service, and there was no point in spending $150 on a replacement phone I'd only use 8 months. Retrospectively, I wish I had waited for the iPhone because I'm a huge Apple fan, but I have a GREAT phone nonetheless (much better than the A670.) I'm hoping that the iPhone will be on T-Mobile by the time my Sidekick contract is up, but if not, then, hopefully, AT&T will have good coverage here by then.
(Okay, that's a lot of text, but it's worth your time to read it.)
