ok i am completely new to this forum and smartphones/WM6, but I am going to try and make complete use of my new dash and i want it to be as effecient as possible. Needless to say, i don't much about messing with registries, but I would really like to try and fix and adjust several things that seem to bug most everybody but I really can't get the gist of how i need to make these changes so here are my questions, any help is greatly appreciated, i find this very ironic because i am a seasoned user in a completely unrelated forum, yet i am sure i am asking a noob question for this forum, but oh well we have to start somewhere..anyway

1.) I have downloaded WordPad for my Dash, what other apps do I need in order to modify hotkeys, startup, shutdown options, etc.? If there are other apps, what are they and do i need to do anything in terms of unlocking the phone in order to use them?

2.)Once I have the apps I need, what are the steps i need to follow in order to enter the registry modifications, for example do i complete it on my pc and then sync or are they done on the dash itself?

3.) Last but not least, does doing any kind of app unlock such as the one from surrealnetworks void any kind of warranties, I know this is a stupid questions as I am almost 100% positive any kind of applications won't void any warranties because i am technically not messing with any of the dashes hardware, but i just want to be sure.

I know these may be stupid questions, but I am new, and just like everyone else on here I want to use this awesome phone as efficiently as possible and to its full potential, so I would greatly appreciate your patience and any help you can give me. Thank you!

As a newbie myself I found the very first post in this thread immensely instructive. I think it addresses your questions quite well. Just set aside some time and really read what is already here. You should be able to catch on in no time like I did.

I read through the entire thread from time to time and keep a text file with a list of the hacks that I use myself and want to remember whenever I have to do a hard reset of my Dash. That might be a good thing for you to do as well.

I posted this before, but I am afraid noone will see it since it is on another page now. I cannot figure this out. I bought my dash just a few months ago, so it already had WM6 on it. I ran the cab file to install appunlock from surrealnetworks, then i soft reset and ran the cab file for total commander, another soft reset. I keep trying to reset the glypcache limit value, but every time i do it instantly sets it right back to 16384. Anyone have an idea why? I think maybe I'm missing something w/ the appunlock because I can't get a couple programs to work, either.

I have never used Total Commander to edit the registry. I have always used Regedit STG on the Dash (which you can find HERE) or Mobile Registry Editor on the PC while the Dash is connected (which you can find HERE)

The AppUnlock I have always used is the one listed in the first post (also available HERE)

I also like CeNotepad (available HERE) to edit the .lnk files via the PC instead of on the little Dash keyboard.

I hope that helps! Good luck.

    Hey Guys,
I'm finally going to go through with the update to WM6.
What's the best way to backup my info before I do this? I think that all I really need to backup are my phone numbers... so I figure I can just trasnfer that to my SIM card, right?
In phonebook -> click on menu -> SIM manager -> click on menu -> contacts to SIM. Is this the best way? Doesn't look like all my contacts have been copied over though?!?
Also, when I transfer back, will everything be copied? Would hate to have to edit everything!
    THANKS!

I leave all contacts on my SIM unless I want them to have a picture and custom ringtone. Saving to the SIM is what you need to do for the address book. As for pictures and ringtones, I send them to my computer before i do anything.

Thanks for your reply. This is what I did at the beginning (have everything stored on my SIM card), but it forces me to have seperate entries for Cell/Work/Home numbers, no?

I did find a website on this, but I cannot find it again for the life of me.

Re-upgraded to Windows Mobile 6...trying to get Windows Media Player to play full screen in Landscape mode (it's doing Portrait now for whatever reason).

Tried to search but no hits. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

I have a few questions. After dl'ing the app unlocker where on the phone do you install it? Same question for total commander? I installed them so I see them in File Explorer on the phone. I have run the setup and then done a soft reset. I don't know if this is right but I can't do or don't know how to do anything from here.

    Any help would be great.

Forgot I have another question. I bought the phone used and everytime I turn it on it tries to send a text message that never gets through. How do I stop this?

    Thanks

I was wondering if anyone knew how to keep and change the "home screen layout"? Every time I restart my dash it reverts back to the original, any thoughts?

Part of the reason might be because it not Short_IE.ink.

    It's Short_IE.l (L)nk.

Hey I was wondering if I could actually make my screen look like this image in this post? In post #41 by jt7654. Thanks

    Motorola DASH ROM Downgrade

    New user to this forum.
I upgraded my Dash to Win Mobile 6.0 with the RUU tool on the T-Mobile website - it worked fine. Unfortunately my main application is Motorola GoodLink (e-mail sync SW to my work e-mail account) which does not yet support Win Mob 6.0. Now I need to downgrade my phone back to factory condition with Win Mobile 5.0. T-Mobile says not possible and if I do, my warranty is void. Don't care about that but anybody know how I can do this?

    Thanks

    Removing Windows Live

After upgrading to WM6 on my Dash, I was checking out the new features. I tried Windows Live/Messenger, but found it will not run through the proxy. HAve others found this?

Anyway, I'd like to remove Windows Live from m Messaging list, but it doesn't let you delete it like an email account. Anyone know how to remove it?
    Isn't technology wonderful!

Oh geez, I gotta say that I procrastinated upgrading to WM6 because I had heard that there was no Tzones fix to get unlimited internet, until I read page 8 of this thread! CRAP! I wish I knew sooner, because WM6 is soooooo much nicer than WM5!
