Definitive evidence for the "endless reboot" and other issues...

To recap some of the issues that I've been having since upgrading to WM6:

    1) My upgrade to WM6 went through just fine. I'm using the *official* T-Mobile ROM from the download page

    2) After loading the ROM, subsequent reboots of the phone would be sporadic at best. (No MicroSD card installed yet) Simply rebooting the phone would have about a 50% success rate -- and usually VERY long waits when it was successful. Change the homescreen ("Windows Simple", for instance) the phone would NEVER boot back up. That's right -- NEVER. I've tried probably 30 times total, but with no success. I would then have to hard reset the phone.

    3) Having my Kingston 1GB MicroSD card installed would result in "endless reboots" upon attempting to boot the phone up again. This occurred 100% of the time.

I finally broke down and called T-Mobile support. The gentlemen was helpful, agreed that the behavior was "odd", and sent a new unit. I received it today and have been testing. It came with WM5 which I promptly upgraded to WM6. Guess what? Same behavior with the new phone.

Here is where things get interesting. I read that someone else had some luck with a different SIM card. My SIM is an old "Voicestream" card, so I borrowed a newer SIM (T-Mobile branded) from a co-worker. I put it into my phone (which wouldn't boot after changing my homescreen, by the way) and it booted up fine -- first shot, first time! I changed the homescreen several times -- rebooting each time -- and it never failed to boot back up. Finally, I put my MicroSD card in and booted up. No problem. I also rebooted several times with the MicroSD installed and it never failed to boot up again on the first try. Lastly, I put my old SIM card back in -- same problems and wouldn't boot with the MicroSD installed.

So.... I think I can safely say that my SIM card is the issue here. I'm going to get it replaced and I will report back. Also, I've reported my findings to T-Mobile Support so that others might be saved the "headaches" I've incurred...

    Thanks for reading...

I can't understand how the SIM would be the problem. In my case, when the storage card was removed it would boot perfectly fine. Keep in mind that the SIM was never removed during the process which leads me to believe that the SIM is not the issue.

I've been having my SIM card for 6 years now and never had an issue w/ my phones before upgrading to WM6. Why would your SIM all of a sudden go bad after you upgraded? Troubleshooting is simple. Same Device, WM5, Sim Card, Storage Card - No Issue. Same Device, WM6, Sim Card, Storage Card - Reboot Loop. The only thing that has changed in the entire configuration is the OS. Thats the cause of your problems. If you revert back to WM5 your issues would likely disappear.

But I don't *want* to revert back to WM6 and swapping out my SIM card fixed the issue just fine. I now have a new SIM card, can reboot without issue, and don't have to remove my MicroSD all of the time.

You can flame Microsoft all day long if you like, T-Webb. Enjoy yourself. Meanwhile, my phone is working great now *and* I like WM6 very, very much!

That all said, there are some issues here that Microsoft, T-Mobile and HTC should've worked through. The "MicroSD" issue is obviously very real. The "reverting homescreen" issue is obviously very real. Etc, etc.. This stuff *should've* been caught ahead of time and it was not.

On the other hand, I don't know of any other providers giving a free OS update on their phone yet! That is a pretty good deal...

It would be a pretty good deal if some of us didn't have to invest several hours of our time just to get it up and running smoothly. After the upgrade and initial install of our apps everything should have been smooth sailing. This should have took all but 10 minutes to install the upgrade and how ever long it took to install apps. That time is multiplied by the number of hard resets, number of times we reinstalled apps and the amount of time lost by the reboot loops. To me thats unacceptable. And I still think your SIM wasn't/isn't the issue.

I'm also quite fed up with wm6. I really wanted it to work. It seemed to work at first then sorta went south on me. I've finally given up on it as I am really tired of the issues I have experienced most of the issues mentioned. The really slow browser bugs me to death, because it was so fine pre upgrade.
That and a bunch of other stuff, I want to be able to use this device not always having issues to tweak and stress over.
Tmo is sending me a new device. Looking forward to wm5 again.
