My old phone did this. The phone is constantly looking for networks higher on its preferred list than the one it's currently attached to. All the network select does is force it to register on that network, but the process of searching for other networks continues. I think you have to change network selection from automatic to manual to prevent this, although I never really cared to do that. If I wanted to use a secondary network to make a call, I'd just force the phone onto that network and quickly dial the call. Since most of the time the network can't hand off to the primary network in mid call, that effectively forced the phone to stay on the secondary for the duration of the call.
the only phone i ever used that allowed me to stay on the secondary network i think was a nokia

Just go to Cingular Corporate Store, Customer Service told me they give them away for free...
I got mine for free!
!?
They give away SIM cards for free? You kiddin', right?
I haven't heard of this. I may drop by and pick up a few SIMs. I actually have two prepaid lines I wanna open and getting a few new SIMs would be nice.

what is the Network Code of the new at&t USIM? is it 310-38 like the cingular ones? or is it a new MCC/MNC? Also, does your USIM's allow storage of up to 3 numbers per sim contact Entry? ie: mark home, mark office, mark cell all on one contact? if so, it is just like our new rogers 4000 series HSDPA sims. ours also hold 400 numbers in USIM compliant phones
I went to the store and they didn't wanna give hook me up.
I actually do have a legit need for one (one of my prepaid SIMs is acting up); the other would be nice to have as a backup. It doesn't have to be one of the at&t branded SIMs, as I don't really care what it looks like.
I guess I will have to go back and talk to someone different...ask to see if I can get a SIM or two.

On my AT&T 3G SIM cards, they both start out with the 890141 like the rest of the Cingular National SIM's. Looking at the Network list (while in my unbranded SLVR) it goes like this:

Now you know how I think.

Interesting, so AT&T's MCC/MNC has changed, pretty cool. Oh and as for SIM capacity, I think you need a USIM compliant phone to read the full capacity. I tried a Rogers USIM in my moto krzr and it only read 250 contacts, but it reads all 400 plus e-mail addys just fine in my Samsung HSPDA a706
They don't use the alpha tag in the SIM (or the cel site.) The override everything with a fixed label of "AT&T" with a feature I can't remember the name of. So it doesn't matter what it says in the SIM. But why they don't want to change it is a good question nontheless.
