Unhappy k510i unlock problem or SIM problem?

I'm sorry but I'm ridiculously confused here, even after reading some of these threads on this site:

I purchased a Sony Ericsson K510i (full-retail) in Poland (Jan 2007), for local use there, with a local GSM service. The guy I bought it from said it was unlocked, and checked it with several different prepaid providers. I ended up using my prepaid ERA GSM (related to T-Mobile?) as that was what I was using with my older, 5 min battery life phone

Because it's a tri-band phone, and because I use T-Mobile in the US, and because I payed about $150 for it I decided to take it home. When i put in my T-Mobile SIM card I got a message: "Insert correct SIM card". For reference, using this SIM with my old motorola v60 everything works (of course, that was purchased via T-Mobile)

So, is my T-Mobile SIM card locked for only branded phones? Or is my phone actually locked? Or, because I was using ERA GSM for 5 months, is there some residual memory thing that ERA did to my phone so that I can only use their service??

Any advice/help would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance!!

this was a reply to a thread i posted on seuniverse:

    Network [Locked icon] 5

means your phone is locked to a provider.

To my limited knowledge a 10 would signify phone unlocking correct? But if they're all 5's...

This does not mean anything. It all depends on how the provider orders sonyericsson to program the locks.

Umm... so what does that mean now?

It simply means that his phone was locked in the first place. The Network locked icon means exactly what the guy before me stated.
