they should be about the same. hopke.net is the oldest and might be a little more reliable because of that fact. But Zaks is good too though.
I'd recommend signing up for a year with hopke.net and also sign up with Zaks. Might as well.

For speed, I've always found Verizon's to be the fastest. And if you use it a lot, that unlimited minutes for $15/month can be a good deal.

Yes, the verizon browser on the EVDO network was a much faster browser. I'm assuming that these don't take advantage of the EVDO network. If not, I can just change my phone to 1X all the time since I don't use Vcast or anything else like that.

the proxy has nothing at all to do with the data connection. Verizon is your provider and they provide the data link between your phone and your proxy. If you are in an EVDO area, you get EVDO speeds.

Sweet! I'm at work and my signal at my desk sucks, so I'll be able to take advantage of that at EVDO speed later on my way home.

is there a downside to using the google wap and port 80?
    do you lose any features?
    thanks.

also, is there any other way to get to the chat and email links without setting them as shortcuts?

The chat and the email links are in the Messages menu.

And the downside to using google as the proxy is that google isn't actually a proxy so you won't be able to view any url other than one that is on google's domain.
Here's something I've saved to copy & paste since the question comes up so much:
"As to viewing any url other than google or any page that google doesn't re-process and feed to your phone, you need a real proxy. Google is not a proxy, they are simply a web page. But since they convert the web for optimum viewing on your device and then send that processed page to your phone, they kind of work like a proxy. It is a handy work-around. But as you can see, you can't leave google's domain. To do that you need a real proxy. So sign up for a proxy like zaksenterprises.com or hacktherazr.com or hopke.net"

I sure wouldn't use some public open proxy to check my email or anything that required a login. I'd use a proxy like zaksenterprises.com or hopke.net
But anyway, there are some email wap sites in the Email and IM category:

    help guys...

i followed the steps in post 1 here in this thread, used the param file link provided to download it instead of editing a backup of my own file

everytime i try to access the web i get a message about not having permission to access humpa.com......

i have no idea whats wrong or what i need to do to change whatever needs to be changed....i read pages of this thread to try to figure it out, but i am not seeing any step by step instructions that are clear enough for me, i see people saying "change your proxy" and stuff, but i have no idea how to do that, i would appreciate a good step by step "how to" to fix my problem

    thanks guys

** FYI, to anyone trying this and getting the same initial results i did, go to step 8, step 9 should already be changed for you if you used the download DrFunk provided, but step 10 still showed port number 8080 on my phone, changed to 80, reboot, works fine now!! nice and fast

get a real proxy - that public proxy that he loaded onto that paramtable1.fil is probably no good anymore. That's why when I provide a paramtable1.fil for download, I simply put in the google work-around for starters - at least that way it will still work months/years down the road and I don't have to keep answering these posts.

zaksenterprises.com offers a free wap service, or hopke.net is $1/month
Or put in wap.google.com for your proxy and port 80 and http://wap.google.com as your homepage ... you can edit all those settings from the Service Menu > WAP Settings

    ah, good work!
I recall that issue now - for some reason the phone leaves the port at 8080 even though you use port 80 in the paramtable1.fil, so you simply have to go to the WAP Settings and change the port yourself. I had forgotten about that - glad you figured it out.
