Mobile Web costs $5/month and uses minutes (Nights & Weekends free, of course).
Using this hack bypasses the $5/month and still uses minutes.

But if you switch to a new Nationwide plan, Mobile Web is free and included, but it no longer uses minutes it uses kb's. And the rate is $1.99/mb - of course you can still get the VCast $15 package and get unlimited data (no kb or minute usage/charges).

Oh, ok. Thanks a lot. Cool, free $5 usage-ish.

If you use Mobile Web a lot, then probably more importantly than the $5/month is the ability to configure the homepage url and various shortcuts.

I'll paste in that info (I have some stuff I save to copy & paste in threads):

Open the paramtable1.fil in a text editor and the hex values start like this in the top left ... the very first row:
    30 1E 00 ........
You want to change it to:
    30 1E 20 ........
Once you do that, you will be able to edit the proxy settings and Homepage url from the WAP Settings menu on the phone itself.
After you replace the paramtable1.fil and reboot the phone, of course.

While you have the paramtable1.fil open, you will see various url's after all the websession info.

    These are the default URL's:
    http://mw2.vzwwap.com/chat
    http://mw2.vzwwap.com/email
    http://mw2.vzwwap.com/newsandinfo
    http://mw2.vzwwap.com/pixplace
    http://myacc.vzwwap.com/selfServe/forms/myacc.jsp
    http://mw2.vzwwap.com/addfavorite/
    http://mw2.vzwwap.com/search
    http://mw2.vzwwap.com/goto

Some of those url's are in the Get It Now menu, and some are in the actual web browser menu.

These are in the Get It Now menu:
Editing the chat url will change where you go when you go to Messages > Chat
Editing the newsandinfo will change where you go when you go to Get It Now > Get News & Info
Editing the pixplace url will change where you go when you go to Get It Now > Get Pix and Flix > Pix Place
The above can also be assigned to the 4-way directional pad as shortcuts - except the News & Info one.
News & Info behaves differently as a shortcut as opposed to navigating there from the Get It Now menu.
If you use Get It Now > News & Info, then your phone is trying to go to the newsandinfo url that is in the paramtable1.fil (or whatever you edit that url to).
If you create a shortcut to News & Info instead, then it goes to the Homepage URL that you set in the WAP Settings.

These are in the web browser menu itself:
Editing the search url will change where you go when you are using the browser and click Menu > Search
Editing the goto url will change where you go when you are using the browser and click Menu > Go To
Editing the addfavorite url will change where you go when you are using the browser and click Menu > Favorites

    humpa,
first let me say thanks so much for a very clear and easy set of instructions to accomplish this. now to the problem, starting this morning the ip listed in the instructions is giving me a 403 Forbidden error. any idea why? i set it as the primary proxy on the phone but it kept bumping me to the verizon site which was still listed as secondary. when i set both primary and secondary to the ip you listed then the phone is unable to connect. i typed the ip into my browser and i get the 403 Forbidden error specifically, "Access denied by access control list". any help would be much appreciated.

UPDATE: oops, i see that i should have addressed this to DrFunk. my bad! it's obviously a problem with the proxy so i'm open to suggestions.

Get a valid proxy then. I'm not sure what IP you are referring to, but zaksenterprises.com is a common one people use. And so is hopke.net, but they charge $1/month. Sign up to one of those and they'll tell you the IP, port, username, and password you need to use.

the ip i was referring to is the one listed in the instructions, 165.228.131.12. apparently it's a public proxy that is no longer public. anyway, thanks for the heads up on zaks. i've already started the process of getting set up.

    Emergency Help Needed!!

I followed the directions closely. Found the correct paramtable1.fil file, modified it with a hex editor. Saved a backup of the original file, overwrote the original paramtable1.fil on my phone by right clicking in BitPim and saving. Then I did a reboot and now my phone only blinks Verison Wireless on and off as it appears to try to reboot. I cannot access the phone anymore through BitPim. Any Ideas what went wrong, and is there a way to fix it?

    Not writing param file?

I have tried writing the paramtable1.fil file on three different 8550's with the same results. I have tried a different version of BitPim, different computers, and different paramtable1.fil files but I get the same result.

I save the original paramtable1.fil file and then use the BitPim function to overwrite, and I select the downloaded param file. I reboot the phone using BitPim and then I try using ##77647268550 to see if I can edit my WAP settings to confirm the ip address, port, etc. And no matter what I do, all of the settings are stock from Verizon and I cannot edit any information. Am I missing a simple step?

    Thanks in advance.

I was able to swap out the phone for a new one at a Verizon store. I lost all my phone numbers however. I think I will avoid this mod unless I absolutely need to use my phone to browse the internet.

Backup Assistant is a free Get It Now app (I know, imagine that?) and will keep you from ever losing your phonebook.

.... though it will show that it is $1.99/month, but you will NOT be charged 1 penny so long as you have a verizonwireless.com account.

Thanks for the help Humpa. I am waiting to be verified at your Humpa.com forum so I can ask you a followup question (autox).

**Modifying the Paramtable1.fil was not the reason my phone stopped working.**

My second phone, although I have not attempted to modify the paramtable1 file is now doing the exact same thing. I need to find out what is causing this problem, and a way to fix the phone so I don't have to keep getting a new one at Verizon. I will provide details of what I did in a followup post.

I'll go add you now ... i've been ignoring my forums since about turkey day ... sorry, it is mostly spammers signing up so sometimes I don't pay a lot of attention to it. I should probably change the instructions a little for people like you - like have people send me an email to let me know they are waiting.

Thanks, I will try again. In the mean time, I have started this thread on the topic.

I found out what was wrong. The paramtable1.fil file on the first page can't be downloaded. When I did a right click and save as it was saving the error as a text file. Weird. Does anyone have a copy of the paramtable1.fil from this thread?
