What's crazy is that I just sync'ed my iPhone at 6:30 and out of habit, checked for updates, there was nothing.

    It's now 8pm and it's there....version 1.01 !!!!!

It doesn't tell you what's changed though.

Update went OK. It appears to hang half way thru, but have patience, in time it will continue on. The iPhone will then reset and re-activate itself.

There are no obvious changes I can see so far.

Get it before word spreads and the servers go down under the load! I'm kidding (kind of).

See, it pays to check HoFo frequently and often.

Do you have to re-enter all of your info to reactivate the phone (ss # etc..)?

No. I entered nothing. Just a notice appeared for a few seconds saying re-activating. Then everything is normal. I would only update the firmware on the iTunes that you first used to activate however.
