Nice deals -- I may switch over now if the contract buyouts are still going on. Been drooling over Helio's data plan and the Ocean for sometime now while I patiently wait out my current two-year contract.

Out of curiosity, can an estimate be given on how much more the monthly plan rate is after applicable additional fees? My current cheapie voice plan is $35/mo but becomes $45 after all the garbage fees they add on -- should I expect much the same with any provider?

Technically the contract buyouts ended in September (but we can always look into what your situation is right now).

The cheapest voice + data plan is $65 a month plus taxes - which will hover around $9 extra a month. So out the door the lowest priced voice/unlimited data Helio plan will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $74 amonth.

The nice thing about Helio is that you can adjust your rate plan in the my account website login without extending your contract - so if you need to save a little one month, drop your plan down - and if you have some extra cash, bump it up. It is nice to trottle your minutes and plans without being DINGED like verizon does you on contract extension

I see, so ~$9 is fairly standard to be added on top of the monthly rates. It mostly hurts now because it adds over 25% to my cheapie rate, so given that perspective it seems like quite a lot. The higher the base rate, the more the taxes get absorbed, I suppose.

As for my current situation, as I said I've been sitting on my hands waiting for my contract to end and I've still five months to go. AT&T's early termination fee is $175 regardless of the time of cancellation, which makes me wish I canceled much earlier on rather than try to wait it out. But now I'm at the point where I've waited so long that I don't know if it would be very sensible to take that termination fee hit.

So, if HelloHelio could do me a tremendous favor and extend that contract buyout offer then it would no longer be a dark cloud over my head and I could feel free to transition over to something shiny, new, and infinitely more enjoyable.

Now, convincing my wife that getting Helio with an unlimited data plan, the Ocean, and absorbing more taxes, is a much better way to go might be another hurdle to jump, but you can leave that part to me

You should try just waiting those few months. With the rumors of the new device on the horizon you might want to see what that's all about first. And when they release new devices they usually have good promos to go along with it. If you don't like the new device that's coming out, then you don't loose anything. You can still get the Ocean when your contract expires (or still pay the ETF if you wish)

I do agree with unicorngoddess here on waiting, but I do have to say that there are features of the Ocean that are vastly different than the rumors that are going around - so if you are wanting a new device that is more phone, then waiting is a good idea.

If you are waiting for a device more along the lines of the "Ocean 2", then you should just get the Ocean now, because the new device(s) coming out around christmas are going to be more phones than full featured Oceans.
