How to: MP3 Ring tones on Branded SE Phones (Working!)
Just got your new shiny Rogers w580i? But wait! It won't allow you to use your own ring tone and it won't let you use .dm file in your ring tone folder.
Follow these steps and you'll be good to go!
What you need:
DRM Packager 1.35
MyPhoneExplorer
Creating a DRM'd MP3 file:
1. Install and open DRM Packager 1.35
2. Drag and drop the MP3 file into the window and click on Create DRM Content.
Importing MP3 ring tone:
1. Plug in your w580i. IMPORTANT: Choose Phone Mode
2. Open up MyPhoneExplorer.
3. On the left side, click on down arrow beside the word Files.
4. You will now see Memory Stick and Phone Memory on right side window.
IMPORTANT: Do not go into memory stick or phone memory
5. Drag and drop your .dm MP3 ring tone into the white window. After successfully transferring, you will not notice if it is done on your computer window.
6. Check on your phone. It will have a pop up saying you have transferred a music file, click yes to install it into the Music folder.
7. After that another pop up will come up asking you how to use it. In the list of options, choose "Ring tone" and you are done!
Keep in mind, if you try to install it in a ring tone folder, it will not work. You have to let the phone install the file in a folder for you.
Having said that, now your Rogers w580i is basically all set. You can have your own MP3 ring tone, AND you can play any MP3 music file without having to DRM them on Walkman player.

or just drag the file into the root folder...
when u c both Phone Memory and Memory Card folders in phone mode
thts where u drag and the drop the .dm file
Where ever you put them, the phone will not auto read. I know how it works because I've done it many times on w810i. For some reason w580i won't do that.
You can easily find the file through file manager but it only has option of "send" not "use as".
The phone will not put any MP3 or .dm to the ring tone to choose from list either.
Cellery suggested in another post to try wma. Looks like it's blocked as well.
I think Rogers did a solid job crippling its phones, I'm also guessing this is just start. Future Rogers phones will be worse.
Update: Curious question, anyone know anything about .dcf extension?
Using v 1.35 which I think is the latest. Isn't your instruction referring to the upload button at the top of the menu list? Tried that, nothing. The phone itself doesn't read .dm file extension. I have w810i and have been successful with uploading .dm ringtones. So I know I'm doing things right.
I was just hoping maybe someone would know or find out some other way now with information gathered.
Are you sure you're putting them in the Ringtones folder? If you put them in the Others folder it will not work. I don't think just putting it in the root will work either. You have to put them in the appropriate folder.
how come some w580 dont work?
I did my a few days ago and it worked perfectly
Not sure, it's weird. I know you and another person on this forum was able to get it working without a problem. And then there were a few others like me who still can't.
Can you tell us the settings you used for DRM packager? I've just used default forward-lock setting as I have been with w810i.
The weirdest thing is, Walkman and Rogers music player is allowing ANY mp3 (without DRM) file to be played, yet it won't read MP3 file as a ring tone.

im having the same problem too, when i go into my phone by bluetooth i see that all the ringtones in the phone have a .dcf extension and no .dm. Could this be the problem?
