Well, at least they're on the right road, now they need to move northwest on 101 a few hundred miles

From what I can see on FCC... it looks like AT&T doesn't have much spectrum in those markets of NorCal

Not enough spectrum (5MHz in 2 counties, 10MHz in the other 2)
    AT&T... your world, throttled.

AT&T has 3g in some of Shasta County, in Redding, Anderson, Cottonwood and Palo Cedro.

Some areas - eg Eureka has 10MHz

    http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsS...sp?licKey=8886

    5MHZ in Marin/Menodinco
    http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsS...licKey=2325823

    15MHz in Redding
    http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsS...itionID=132958

    Another 5MHz for Marin
    http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsS...licKey=2421347

    15MHz for Lake/Mendocino
    http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsS...licKey=2550070

    5MHz more for Redding
    http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsS...itionID=146603

I suspect that AT&T would have to physically build out more capacity (sites) to support 3G + GSM/EDGE.
In those cities/towns, along the Pacific, there isn't much traffic. Along I-5 freeway traffic would most likely bring it to its knees.

Eg. Yuba / Marysville has 15MHz of PCS + Cell A. 27.5 MHz paired! That's more than Los Angeles!!
Take I-5 through an Edge Wireless area, and you're looking at half of that. It should be supportable - as long as there's enough physical buildout (I suspect only 1 3G carrier channel though).

They can do it, in Northern California Edge Wireless put 3G in Ukiah (which covers Ukiah, Talmage, Calpella and a TINY bit of Redwood Valley), Lakeport, Clearlake, Clearlake Oaks, Lucerne, Glenhaven, Fortuna, Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville, Blue Lake, Crescent City and Susanville, and Edge wasn't done (with 2G or 3G site rollouts) when AT&T took over, so I suspect it has little to do with spectrum and a lot to do with AT&T simply not putting it up. Hwy.101 actually gets quite a bit of traffic, especially in the summer, as it's the main north/south route through Marin, Sonoma, Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte Counties (NW CA), plus you have roads from the Sacramento Valley that feed into it like Hwy's 20 and 299, and Hwy.20 and 1 from the coast.

For ilvla2, it looks like expansion exists in NorCal since last year... Sacramento/Yuba City area... an a single 'dot' around Redding , but more in Oregon though.
Large chunks in SoCal of expansion though (850MHz coverage areas).

A 'lot' of the existing urban areas that have a bit of green added to them, I suspect are the 850MHz overlays.

Yep, they turned up 3G in Redding, Anderson, Cottonwood, Chico, Gridley, Yuba City and Marysville last summer, that's the last new 3G expansion in NorCal with AT&T.
