hmmmm well thats kinda interesting... that is what i will do first. Although it says on the website as quoted "It has been brought to my attention that if your ICCID number begins with 893103801060, then you have an old style AT&T SIM and this procedure will not work." Everyone that is interested should check their ICCID numbers on their sim to see if they meet or negate this criteria. Monday is just around the corner when it comes to this allegid software unlock so we shall see what happens. If there is no word in the next week by mid week then i dont know what im going to do. Since my ICCID looks just like that im sure it wont work but ill try it anyways for the heck of it.
if all goes well in the next few days or so i will be receiving a software unlock in email from this one Australian dude this is his website...http://iphoneworldwideunlock.com/ .
some people that were first in line have already received it and say it works great. i am going to prep my iphone for unlocking so ill let everyone know how it went once i have done it. i gather it is rather easy now for windows users by just downloading "apptapp for windows" and "pacay.rar" file that cracks the youtube applet or something to get that working. So either tonight or tomorrow ill do the preparation for the unlock and then wait for the unlock software to come my way.

My # starts with that, except the last 2 numbers are not 60 (they're much lower), so I'm not sure if it applies to that exact # and anything lower, or just that exact #. Another reason I haven't bought the iPhone just yet...
I've unlocked my iPhone with the free software unlock.
Everything seems to be working except for EDGE. All the darn websites seem to be talking about the edge setting under general -> network. But all I see is VPN and WiFi. I don't seem the EDGE option.
I suspect us that have the AT&T blue sims are screwed somehow this EDGE setting only pops up when a non AT&T sim is inserted.
been searching the web for the last couple of hours to see how I can force the EDGE setting to appear but no luck
I figured it out. after hours of reading and dicking around.
This is all those who has unlocked their iPhone, have an old AT&T sim and no EDGE.
1. don't bother looking for than damn EDGE setting. You have to go old school and edit a file.
2. ssh into your iphone
3. cd /var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
3.5. cp preferences.plist preferences.plist.orig
4. vi preferences.plist
5. search for "cingular"
6. This should bring you to a code chunk that has the following
<key>apn</key>
<string>wap.cingular</string>
<key>password</key>
<string>CINGULAR1</string>
<key>username</key>
<string>WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM</string>
7. replace wap.cingular with proxy. Delete CINGULAR1 and WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM. So it looks like the following
<key>apn</key>
<string>proxy</string>
<key>password</key>
<string></string>
<key>username</key>
<string></string>
8. Save. Exit you session. Reboot your iphone.
9. Enjoy edge on your old AT&T plan
Your mileage may vary
I don't know is SMS works. why?. I'm tired and I'm going to bed.
You can do any of the steps if you don't have an unlocked phone and at the very least have ssh installed on the iphone.
for some reason when I try your above commands after "vi preferences.plist" for step 4, it doesn't work for me. do I actually type in search for "cingular" as as command? sorry for a newb question
you can also transfer the files over to your computer and use a text editor to make the changes then re load them back to the iphone... this is what I did cause im a noob and dont know commands in that editor! don't forget to restart after!

still haven't gotten EDGE to work. Anyone have a hint on how to get the contacts to show from the SIM?
You can't. You need to sync the contacts from your old phone (with the SIM in it) to Outlook/Outlook Express/iTunes, then use iTunes to re-sync them to the iPhone. As of right now, that's the only way.
