I had the same issue with my W810 through Cingular. I think it's stupid. There's a way to get it to work if you do something with DRM or something like that. I just had mine unbranded because I got fed up with the idea of making separate ringtones.

Yup i got my w580i and debranded it before ever turning it on . You use the R6BC002 firmware and then you can choose which ever CDA you want all the generic ones are listed there .
I'm actually impressed with how little physical branding is on the phone, only at&t above the d-pad and the globe on the activity button.
Overall i'm loving this little phone , at least until its big brother comes out.

I had the same problem as all of you when I first got my w580i from AT&T but then I figured that they didn't block mp3 ringtones but instead they put a limit on the filesize for mp3 ringtones, I believe it somewhere near being blow 600kbs which is about like 30secs which is how long a ringtone should be.
I took 20 second chunks of song weighing in at 244 - 330 KB and they do not work on my w580. I can play them. I can not set as ringtone.
This is what I said on yahoo questions:
----------------
I have a Sony Ericsson w580i. The MP3 ringtones it uses are in DCF format. I have made my own ringtones already but they WILL NOT work in MP3, MIDI, or WAV format. My phone recognizes DCF as MP3 ringtones. I've searched everywhere and looked at other Yahoo Q&A and there is NOTHING to help. Please, someone direct me to a MP3 to DCF converter so I can use MY OWN MP3 ringtones and not have to pay ridiculous prices for ringtones. It should be SIMPLE. Effing phone companies.
Someone PLEASE help me.

The ringtones that came on the phone are .dcf... WTF? How did you guys get your MP3 ringtones to work? Did you make them yourself by cutting 20 or 30 secs from a song you like on your comp?
I'm sorry I can't help you with the technical stuff...I have no idea how to "flash" or "debrand" or whatever...however I was able to use the imserba wap uploader (http://www.imserba.com) to get an mp3 file onto my w580i, but that file was already in a ringtone format. (It was a 24 CTU phone...http://gallery.mobile9.com/f/14254/)
I have noticed that with every SE phone that I get, there are fewer pre-loaded ringtones, and the ones they do have are crap. The ones on AT&T's site are junk as well.
So I'm wondering if it's possible to transfer ringtones from an older to a newer SE phone? And if so, HOW?
And/Or...any recommendations for a site where one can simply purchase a few decent ringtones and NOT get signed up for something, having to pay a monthly fee?

They just want to make money off selling you ring tones.
I don't even turn em on b4 I debrand em.
Debranded w580i lets you set any sound file you can play as ringer / alert / alarm / whatever.
Bunch of crap is what it is.
If you dont want to figgure it our on your own you can just use davinci team or wotan to debrand.
I guess I must be the only one who wants REAL ringers for ringtones. I always roll my eyes when someones phone rings and they have some hip hop or country song blaring.
Sure, AT&T shouldnt put a limit on ringtone length, but who needs a 4 minute ringtone anyway?
