I went today and purchased one, but they were asking now for a drivers license and my credit to be able to purchase one, they told me it was the new rules that apple had made today and i tried diferent locations and all were the same..They told me that now only 2 per customer and with credit approval and since i purchase already one today,i can only purchase one more in the future; when i had purchased 2 last week with no question's asked...Do you know if i can unlock them? or i have to stick now to the plan..
Order more off the apple website and why would you have to stick to the plan? Are Apple employees pointing a gun at you to sign up for AT&T 2 year contracts?

It sounds like the AT&T Corp stores' [mis]management is creating more customer scrutiny, just like people mentioned in a thread earlier this month (but for everyone, not just foreigners). This is getting to be really annoying, AT&T. You'll lose more customers if you continue (off my soapbox now... )
If it's that bad, then hit up the Apple Store (online or brick-n-mortar). They shouldn't have a problem with selling you a phone.

We are the Bor... the new AT&T: Your World, Assimilated.
Next you'll see ATT demanding a contract before they let you out of the store. Can't say you didn't see this coming. The unlock has cut into their profits on the phone.
It's called protecting their interests, whether we like it or not.
^ yeah but theres gotta be something not right about this - im sure this goes against whats written in the apple/att contract - after all, part of the allure of buying the iphone is being able to activate it in itunes - now att's forcing people to give credit information just to purchase the phone? thats gotta be hurting apple's profits...

They're pre-qualifying you for the service you're expected to subscribe to. If you didn't pass the credit check, they'd suggest a deposit or other arrangement
If you don't qualify, or agree to the alternate terms, they then have the right to not sell you the equipment - since you obviously can't sign up for their service through iTunes.
It may not have been as big an issue initially since there were no options open to the buyer. So they probably didn't bother with the credit checks figuring they'd just do it when you activated. Since the unlock, however, the game rules have changed. And ATT is retooling the process to protect themselves as best they can
They do the same if you're getting a throw away handset. Why should the iPhone be different?
If you recall, on iDay even Apple limited purchases to 2 phones/person, and if you thought you were going to be slick and go back for more at another store or on line you were wrong. Unless you used a different name/email combo you were SOL. Same for ATT.

maybe they are trying to prevent the inevitable headache when someone buys one and gets home to find out they dont qualify for service and now want to return it but are faced with a 10% restock fee because it is opened? I dont konw why they would do this.
