thank-you all so much for trying to help me. you are right, my ambition only is sending e-mails to and receiving e-mails from japan. using my old mobile is OK, and company will pay for that, but don't want to hold two mobiles with me all the time. it's foolish, isn't it? i have an american coworker right now who has an iphone. i like it! i think it's cool. it can send and receive e-mails right? can i use the iphone in japanese like a mac?

i called docomo today and as usual, they were unhelpful. they have no idea what unlock is, and told me to buy a mobile overseas. they said it "might" be able to send japanese, of course. it is not true. sigh...

re. kddimobile.com, the mobiles in the us are really .....! quite funny. i think even if i can read japanese e-mail, and send back in romanji would be ok. can unlocked phones do that? i doubt my boss will like it but no choice.

I have a Japanese 903sh (black) which was unlocked here in Japan. I have used it in Australia, the UK and the US and it was fully functional. I was able to send and receive emails and sms in Japanese no problem when using local sim cards in those countries. If you want to buy it let me know. I can send it to you in the US or to someone you know here in Japan if you like.

I am upgrading to the 920sh today, so if anyone's intersted, I have a 912sh and 911sh (both silver) for sale. (not unlocked)

kddi mobile U.S. is a joke. only thing it's good for is free calls from states to japan; not japanese email, and their phones don't work in japan either.

Erm, KDDI Mobile are claiming their modified Sanyo 6600 Katanas can send Japanese email, is this not true then?

DO NOT USE KDDI MOBILE. kddi mobile sucks. Their "japanese" katana is just a Sprint model hacked to type japanese. the encoding issue becomes much worse, because it's completely non-standard. it can only read japanese in it's web browser. the japanese email/sms functions only work with an EXACT SAME MODEL - that is, another KDDI Mobile Katana. it cannot send, nor receive, japanese text message to ANY other phone - docomo, softbank, unlocked japanese phones operating on ATT. NOTHING. kddi mobile is a dead end. in fact, the katana doesn't even have the kana typed on the keys - you have to put some ridiculous sticker on them. completely useless.

Says it all, I believe.

Thanks Yang, I must have missed that thread. Well if that's the case then that's a complete waste of time as aesculanus says. Makes you wonder why they'd go and make such an incomplete solution. Quite astonishing.

Thanks for clearing that up, I won't be recommending them anymore then.

Yep- I thought that they weren't really going to try to be AU for America, but to not even do a decent job of creating a Japanese-capable phone?

That'll teach me to be optimistic.
