Alright i have a huge problem with Ovi maps. I just don't understand the stupidity that comes with the latest version of maps. I have the X6-00 map version 0.1.24.114 (when looking at the bottom of Nokia Map Loader). What ever happened to the 'search for address' feature? When you're in Ovi maps on your phone and you want to drive to a certain address - it's impossible to enter/ or search for an address. Yes you can search for "places", but i use maps mainly when i don't know where an address is and i'm driving somewhere into the suburbs. On the N85 i was able to enter Street, City, Zip, Country , and State.. and it would pinpoint the address perfectly. But on the X6 maps version you can only do some retarded "search" and if you type in an address there's a big chance it'll take one word from the address (usually the street name) and give you "clinton tires" or "lincoln hotel". Especially when i try to set my "home" destination - my address is only numbers, such as 1234 67th St. No way of finding it on phone i have to set my 'home' by clicking on the map.
nokiapwnsse, are you searching on-line or off-line?
I haven't experienced your issues on my X6 when using on-line search. I type in the address in the search bar starting with street #, then street, and usually leave city, state, etc. out if I'm looking for an address nearby. You may have to alter the formatting of the address to get it to work. For example: 1234 67th St. could be 1234 67th Street, or just 1234 67 Street. It's not nearly as forgiving as Google Maps (I know that's an understatement) but I think it is getting better. Off-line search is still pretty pathetic.
Another thing i found is that, at the current time that you're doing your 'search' your map has to be set within that area.. if it isn't - it won't find what you're looking for. Meaning if your position is at your home. And you're trying to search for something in the next state over it won't find it unless you drag the map over to the next state and zoom in far enough. But like i said the N85 maps has a whole form to fill out wen you're looking for an address and it will always find the correct address even in offline searches.
So can someone clarify this for me. Nokia maps will be free and I will NOT be charged data costs if I select the Network option and turn off the ability to connect to the Nokia server correct?

Really useful for beginners....but it only gives what is the technical aspect behind GPS....
Instead of external GPS supporting software now in NOKIA inbuilt GPS software is available for all new series........
need more information for tracking a place.........
Okay.... assume a total n00b when it comes to using GPS on Nokia.
I have a N79. It has an integrated GPS. Cool. S60, 3rd edition.
SW version 30.019, from 11-06-2009.
Nokia Maps installed, v3.01, map ver 0.1.25.114.
When I launch it it says the NA nav license expired on 1/5/2010 - do I want to buy a new license.
Hell no, that would defy the whole purpose of my post.
I went over (most of the) pages in this thread, but there is so much posted that it only confuses me;
plus, most of the stuff is years old.
So... My question is.
I want to use the integrated GPS, with NO DATA, and NO WIFI;
meaning - when I am on the road, I simply want directions from point wherever to point wherever else.
I DO NOT want to be charged data fees, at all.
So.
What software should I download and install, be it Nokia maps or else,
what maps, and how do I put it on the phone?
Please, don't make me put the flame suit on, I'd appreciate answers that help,
and greatly appreciate a good step-by-step or a walkthrough.
Not sure about the license. Plug the phone into the computer, start up pc suite.. actually download Nokia Map loader and see what it tells you. Or write an email to nokia betalabs.
I have the latest Nokia Maps installed, but no Nokia Map Loader on my PC - just OVI suite.
I have the option to download maps through the OVI suite, and did so.
Downloaded Virginia, it went to the memory card, all fine.
When I select in OVI to see what's installed on the phone, it does show Virginia maps and some guidance voice.
Then I disconnected the phone, launched Nokia Maps and it quickly locked to the satellite(s); only 2 or 3 bars were empty.
I could search a nearby town, and select the option for driving to that town.
Withing less than a minute though, the message saying new license need to be purchased ($15 for a year) shows,
and when I select No it clear the driving directions.
What gives? Do I really have to purchase said license in order to used my phone as a GPS, or what?
I believe to have the turn by turn navigation you either need a data plan or get one from nokia. I've never used turn by turn navigation, always only look at the map on my own.
